This may sound a bit unconventional, but going to ask the question any way.
I am thinking about playing a bit with the trigger on my Savage MKII 22LR.

Would it work to use my little 8lb. fish scale to check trigger pull before and after polishing? I know it might not be accurate, but do you think it would be close enough to use for a before and after comparison?

Can't spend much on a trigger pull scale right now.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

Have a good one, Guy

Have never played with a rifle trigger mechanism but do know you do not want to get it too soft. I love an easy smooth trigger but like to feel it also. Be careful, you do not want accidental discharges, wc

Yea, take care fooling with the trigger. The fish scale will work fine. I tie a loop in both ends of a strong cord that doesn't streach. One loop around the trigger and one loop where you lift the fish. If it reads 8# befor and 4# after then you know it's lighter than it was. More important than knowing how light your trigger is is having a trigger you can control. Somewhere along the way it became popular to have a trigger that you didn't know when it was going off, God I hate those trigger's! You never really control a trigger you don't know when it will go off. One of the best trigger's I have is on a sporterized 03 Springfield. It has the origional military trigger in it but was cleaned up nicely. A double stage trigger with lots of over travel. But you get thru the take up and it seem's like the finger is then loaded and the trigger becomes very smooth, over travel and all. I always know when this rifle is going off and never jerk that trigger.

I tried the little fishing scale. It goes to 8 lbs. I tried it 4 times and every time it broke at exactly 6lbs. The scale has 1/4lb. increments and it was dead on the line of 6 lbs.

It sure feels like more than 6 lbs. when trying to stay on target with it. Maybe the fingers are getting worst than I thought....lol

Of course I am not sure that the scale is even close to actual. Still debating  about the polishing job.

I have smoothed a lot of .22 rifle triggers, and replaced some trigger springs - I like a smooth even pull, and just a bit lighter.  Don't want or need it too light.  A careful polishing without removing much metal and NOT changing angles of engagement areas is all you need.  Feels so much better than the "Lawyer Triggers" that guns come with nowadays, and it remains safe.

I like knowing WHEN the trigger will break too.  I do a bit of take-up, then can hold it while I check my breathing, then give it that tiny bit more to shoot.

Appreciate the help on this one. I probably won't do anything for a couple of weeks. I will let you all know how it works out if i do it....and if things don't go quite right, i will let you all know how good one of those nre trigger sets works...lol

I generally set my triggers up to be 3 lbs. I have a couple lighter and few heavier, but the really important ones are set to 3 pounds.

(imho)a digital fish scale will get get you a lot closer

than the old spring scale ,but i would not want to bet my life on either

I would want to test it in increments of .1 lbs against a known weight

Well, The Russian Nagant revolver, the Egyptian Maadi Cadet (Helwan) and Czech CZ52 all have rather stiff and heavy triggers.  Been wondering just what they run, poundwise.  I'll check them this weekend sometime.

I do have a very light triggerpull on my Winchester 75T target rifle - a bit TOO light.  Once in awhile the trigger will trip when closing the bolt.  So, I need to adjust it back up a bit.

I've never owned a triggerpull guage. I use my finger to decide if a trigger is too heavy, creepy, muchy, whatever. I don't have to describe to a client how I adjusted/polished thier trigger down to 31/2 pound, with no creep, so I don't really need one.

I have a Savage MKII with AccuTrigger that I adjusted the trigger down as light as it will go and feels great and works good.  Do you have an AccuTrigger?  I don't have a trigger scale but probably between 2 and 2.5 lbs.  For me that is fine.

If you were to take the rifle to a good machinist he could make you a trigger shoe. Flaigs used to make them mbut haven't seen one in years. What the shoe does is slides on the trigger you have and is held on with a set screw in the side. Once there the trigger becomes three time's as wide as the factory trigger and much more of the pad of your finger rest's on it. Make's a bad trigger feel much better, a good trigger feel lighter and a really good triger becomes very light feeling without becomeing dangeriously light.

This gun does not have the accutrigger. I did the trick about shimming between the trigger group and receiver and it dropped the pull from 6 to 4 lbs on my little scale. It really makes a difference.

Bottom line is you don't have to know the weight of pull. If you are able to control the trigger well and it's not objectional to you, what difference does the weight of pull really make? None!

Rifle Basix makes a trigger for the MKII that fits w/out Accutrigger.  Might be the simplest and cheapest way to go.

Don Fischer wrote: Bottom line is you don't have to know the weight of pull. If you are able to control the trigger well and it's not objectional to you, what difference does the weight of pull really make? None! There in lies the rub. The trigger pull was so stout, I could not hold on the target well.

It was enough that I could cock the gun, hold it barrel down by only having my finger on the trigger and the trigger would not release the bolt. I just weighed the gun with scope mounted with my same little scale. It weighs 5.5 lbs. The trigger pull kept breaking at a tad over 6 lbs. It is hard for me to hold a 5.5 rifle on target when it takes a bit more than 6 to pull the trigger.

With RA, my trigger finger is not what it used to be.

The whole checking the pounds thing was just to see what percentage of difference I might have gained by trying things. Just a measure to see if I had actually gained in lessening the actual pull weight and not my mind "playing tricks'.

The other reason for talking about the actual pounds needed to pull the trigger was to see if my gun was having an issue compared to other guns of the same brand and model.

If mine is 6lbs  and everyone else has a 4 lb. on the same gun, then perhaps there is something actually wrong with mine. Without using an actual unit of measure it becomes very subjective. A fellow that is 6'3" and weighs 250 might consider 6 pounds just fine where I find it a tad stout. So just asking if someone likes the pull on their gun doesn't tell if there might be an issue with mine.

As far as shooting...I have many guns and have no idea what the trigger pull is, I have never checked them. But I know none of them are like this one.

Have a good 'un, Guy

I have seen these before, but thanks for the info.

I found them for around $80 plus shipping. I paid $119 for the gun brand new a few months ago. I thought maybe there might be someone here that had the same issue and a "home" cure.

Thanks again and have a good 'un, Guy

to do any type of adjustment on any trigger without the proper understanding of what your doing is simply ............amazing and  "it sometimes goes off when I close the bolt...." is MORE.........amazing.

I have just become a true believer in gun control..........AND THAT IS TRULY AMAZING.
