Anyone got a good shootable load for 215gr lead hard cast in a Smith model 57 6"? I've been loading 13.2gr of Blue Dot, seem to be O K, just looking for other ideas. I've only had the gun about 2 months, added it to my N frame collection, hard to find brass.
Thanks for the help.

I shoot a Ruger New Model Blackhawk and my loads were developed for that pistol, but my everyday load is either Remington or Starline brass, CCI large pistol standard primers, 7.2 grains of Hodgdon Universal powder, and a 215 cast lead semi wadcutter bullet. My chronograph shows my revolver shoots this load for an average of 1050 fps. The load is accurate and pleasant to shoot. This load shouldn't cause you any trouble. I have two other HEAVY loads developed for my revolver, but they might be too heavy for yours.

I shoot 8 grs of unique for an everyday load, velocity is a bit over 1000 fps, recoil isn't noticable and accuracy is fine.
Ramp things up a bit more with 18 grs of 2400.
I shoot these out of a Blackhawk with the 4 5/8 inch barrel.
And if you're looking for a paddycake load with reasonable accuracy look at trying some trail boss. I don't have the charge weight handy , but it makes for a really nice plinker load.

What about for hunting? I have a blackhawk with 6-1/2" that I would like to start taking into the woods with me.

JC,
A real good hunting load is either the Nosler 210gr JHP or the Hornady 210gr XTP in front of 21.0 grs of H110. I use CCI 350's for primers. It is a stout load that I shoot in my 41 (6 1/2" New model Blackhawk). Work up to it as its a max in my gun but accuracy is outstanding for me.
For the cast 215's I have used 20 grs H110 but that leads the barrel something fierce. (early attempt at hot-rodding cast bullets until I learned better ). Unique or bullseye are much better suited for the cast loads

Jack,
Thank you for the reply. I was thinking about the hornady bullet since I have had great luck with those bullets from a black powder.

I shoot 7 1/2 grs. of Unique for around 950fps.in my 57 and 875-900 in the 4" 58. Very good load in my S&W 57 and 58.

Anybody use W231 using a 215gr hard cast bullet?

Mark,
Try 7.5 grains of 231 as a starting point. I think the Max load is 10 grains of 231.
As always all disclaimers apply to his information.
Have fun,
Jerry

Thank you all, I'm going to try the 231 load. I've got a couple of pounds floating around, need to use it up.
Thanks again.

I've just started handloading for my Model 57. I tried 7.0 Unique with a cast lead 210 grain bullet. Accuracy was good and recoil was not a problem.
Now that winter is here I'll be shooting indoors with Berry's 210 gr. plated bullets. I'm going to try 6.0 Red Dot for a gentle indoor load. Hardly a magnum load, but it should put holes in paper targets just fine.

Unique normally smokes quite a bit. You might want something that burns cleaner for an indoor range.

Thanks, swampshooter. I should have mentioned that the Unique load is my outdoor load. I use the plated bullets and Red Dot for indoor shooting.
We don't shoot centerfire lead bullets at my indoor range.

Even thou I use many powders, I use a lot of WW231 and WW748 for a broad spectrum of standard loads.
These have proven to be dependable powders for the bulk of my reloading needs and it works well in my Dillon presses.
If some one needs a good load, not too hot or not too light, I probably have loaded it with the Winchester powders.
