Okay loader dudes, Below is a link to a video titled "Recoil" The quoted text is what came to me in the email w/ the link. Don't know if any listed info is accurate but the video is pretty damn funny............................ Enjoy!
This gun was basically a "show and tell" custom built on a Thompson Encore (fancy version of the Thompson Contender). The caliber...600 Nitro Express. That's right...an elephant gun round in a handgun.
The story goes that the guy that built it is some kind of custom gun maker, and built this as an exhibition piece. He takes it to the range with him just to show it off, and the big guy that shot it (in the video) had been bugging the builder to let him shoot it. Now think about this...only until fairly recently (early-mid '80's IIRC) the .600 Nitro Express was hands down the biggest, nastiest, hardest hitting, and heaviest recoiling weapon you could buy. It was designed for one simple purpose...to knock an elephant flat on his behind. It was really built as an exhibition piece for guys "compensating"...this cartridge is known for breaking collarbones, arms, shoulders...of the shooter!
Think about this...in the gun world they use what is termed as a "recoil index" to kind of give prospective buyers an idea of what a gun kicks like.
A .30-06 gets a rating of a 1.0, which for many people is about the limit of what they can shoot multiple rounds thru comfortably. A 243 is rated at like a .4, a .270 was like a .8, etc. The 600 Nitro Express is rated at a 9.4...9.4 times more punishing than a 30-06.

Imagine what he would look like if it hit him in the face?
The worst recoil I every felt was a double barrel 10 Ga. and both barrels went off at the same time.

This is strictly a case of a total lack of common sense. That individual had no business shooting that gun what so ever. I own and shoot several big bore, high caliber rifles and handguns. I NEVER let strangers or others fire my guns at the range. It's not that I'm trying to be a prick, it's the fact if something goes wrong, it's going to fall on your shoulders. In this case the guy now has a screwed up gun, and the clown who did it will walk away with an, "gee I'm sorry". I simply tell people that I'm shooting handloaded ammunition, (which I always am), and I do not want to accept any responsibility if something bad should happen. Big bore rifles and handguns always seem to attract a crowd and there will always be someone who steps up and asks to shoot them. Bottom line, it pays to be careful. Bill T.

Hey TG.
I'll step up to the plate for that 45-70 load. I don't mind recoil and sides I get to shoot someones elses ammo. I should be down to see doc here soon I hope, we'll team up if at all poss. and I'll give it a whack. Hell I'll even let doc film it this could be fun!! Yeah I admit it I'm a recoil junkie. thankfully the better half understands and likes to laugh her butt off when I get a real good recoiler.
Take care Be safe Poacher.

Hi all, 1st post
darwin-award material... I did the numbers fer fun:
Conservation of Impulse tells us that a 4 1/2 lb Thompson Encore will move in the opposite direction of a 900 gr. Bullet, at a sedate 20 m/ sec (45 miles/h). I'd guess that our shooter absorbed about half of the energy... commendable. still would be similar to being hit by a sledgehammer and entirely appropriate for the clowning with guns.
It's a Toy... NOT !

Welcome aboard Tyr14.Glad to have ya....I agree,you all wouldn`t catch my ass pulling the trigger on that monster.Geez what a massive amount of recoil that round produces even in a deadly game rifle and that all its good for...
Hye Poach,I`ll make ya stick to that.Me and ole Doc meet up every now and then down in Austin.Maybe soon I think we`ll be meeting up for some trigger time with some feral hogs,or at least I`ll be there to hunt for one day with em..Hope to see ya soon bud...

Fella's;
Y'all better take another look at that video. It did hit him in the head. Specifically, in the area of his left cheekbone.
