One of my favorite revolvers is my 8 3/8" S&W Model 14.
I load 2.7 gr Bullseye with a 148gr hollow based wadcutter.
I can shoot 1" groups at 25 yds with this combination.
This is a great round to use to teach someone to shoot because of little recoil.

| The cylinger on my old Taurus measures 1.670. That seem pretty long for a 38 Special doesn't it?

Sounds like factory .357 would fit in both your guns, as well as mine.
Spooky, huh?
I posted this at glocktalk, those dudes know a lot about pistols.....Last edited on 15 September 2007 05:48 PM by caz223

Unless I'm mistaken the M10 & M19 cylinder are the same length but the chamber of the 38 should be shorter. I've checked several 10's and have yet to find one that would chamber the longer case.
Did you purchase the little sixgun new? Any chance the cylinder was changed? Or rebored?
As for putting the M10 away, you can find 38 special cylinders for these sixguns pretty easy and they aren't much trouble to fit so get that baby out and put it back into service.

I asked over at SW forum, and one said there were a few M-10s chambered in 357 Mag. I seriously reccomend having a professional gunsmith look at it, and see if there is a problem there.
In the meantime, shoot it, good sidearm! Or, send it to me, I shoot only 38s. Then you can stop worrying.

It's too hot in AZ for him to shoot it.
Send it to WV, 40's tonight. Plenty cool to shoot.

Too hot? C'mon, it only got to 100 today, mild fall weather... I was at the range yesterday morning. Doscovered I can get to the range after my son leaves for school, and be back before the loving wife gets up.

My Taurus has a shoulder in the chambers that looks to be about as deep as a 38 special case is long.
Now If I could just figure out why it shoots so high.

I've got a Model 64 Heavy Barrel (the stainless version of the M10 illustrated in this thread) and an M10-based PPC gun. Neither will chamber .357s.
This is an interesting mystery. Please keep us posted on the solution.

seems like a model 10 that will chamber a .357 magnum case would make it pretty much the same as a model 13... i had a model 13-2 and it was a real good shooting handgun.. i couldn't pass up a trade for a model 27 for cheap money though..

I Still load 38, and by no means would I call it ancient. I don't actually own a 38 revolver, but I shoot it from one of my 2 357 Mags. Usually the Dan Wesson modle 14, but I do break out Dads security six occasionally.
I use CCI 500 primers and 148 gr Cast SWC. as for powder I have used 3.8 gr of W231 for the last 4 years, but just bought some green dot to play with and see how it preforms

| I still load .38 Special. I have a Ruger GP100 that I enjoy shooting .38 Special in, and my daughter bought a Taurus .38 she shoots some too. Although I load some .357 Magnum also, I really like the .38 for accuracy.

| I love shooting 38 spcl / 357 Mag and 44 Mag revolvers for a simple reason of not having to chase the brass that is spitting out of my semi autos. You don't have to deal with "Hey, that's my brass" or have the range officers sweep it into their buckets. I do color my primers with a sharpee (blue, green or red) marker now to try to end those disputes.

Charley
Still own load and shoot for the 38 special along with the 38 S&W cartridges. I find this caliber a joy to shoot and practice with. I own 2 S&W a model ten and a snub nose in 38 special and a bankers special colt 38 s&w. Just started reloading for it recently. I use a 158 gr semi wad cutter cast lead bullet and green dot to propel it down range. This was my first caliber I started handloading for got me hooked.

I have a RCBS green machine dedicated to 38 spec.I load HB hornady with 2.7 of 700X.I will be loading 148gr wadcutters I cast as bought is to much.I loaded HB upside down for defence.I shoot a mod 10 HB with bomar rib.and a S&W 52.
I cant see loading with any powders but bullseye or 700X in 38.uses little and as good as it gets.357 is different. I use unique in 45 colt and push it but not to max.

| I bought many boxes of 38 speer & hornaday wadcutters in the 70's & 80's so I have a supply plus 110gr JHP & 125gr jhp.Have a Dillon RL550B ,bought Fed Target wadcutters & had lots loaded .A former club member went to a gun wrecker and bought a heavy frame 44 special that the wrecker had modified to feed 44 mag loads as Bill was shooting at the pistol range I heard a really loud report & walked to the range.Saw the top strap of the S&W peeled back and the top 1/2 of the cylinder gone Bill wasn't injured but was covered in black residue. After learning what he'd bought I & others told him to take it back to the wrecker & get his money back then report him he told us this wrecker had modified several revolvers to fire magnum ammo! 3.5 grains of Titegroup under a lead SWC 158-grain makes my .38's go bang.
I loaded 1200 rounds over the past few weeks, waiting for the rains to stop.
I rediscovered revolver shooting, at least ya don't have to crawl around on the ground picking up empties like the .45 does. If I wasn't reloading I wouldn't have bought a .38 at all, and that would have been a shame because the couple I got so far are nice.
