The .38 Smith & Wesson Special is one of the greatest handgun cartridges ever. It will never die. In addition to being fiendishly accurate (as a cartridge), it is capable of handling MOST of the situations we ask handguns to take care of for us.
I have 6 .38-chambered revolvers and 12 more in .357 that eat a lot of .38s. I carry most of the time where I live, and most of that time it's either a .38 or a .45ACP depending on what I am doing. My preference usually goes to the .38.
I love the .38 Special. It's a work of genius.

I have two 357 Mags that I shoot 38 Sp through, as well as my 2 Contender Barrels that are in 357 Max.
My load is really simple 3.4gr of 231, 158 gr LSWC

This thread is getting a little old but not too....
My first thought when I read the initial post was "what you talk'n bout willis?"
Next thought was, you're just stirring the pot.
At any rate, 38 spl is what I mostly shoot. I'm partial to revolvers, I'm getting too old
& fat nor I have no desire to chase brass. Although I would enjoy following youins around to pickup yours.
I usually take another caliber or two in pistol or rifle but I always retreat to the
357 loaded with 38spl. I'm not limited to this caliber but I do enjoy it most. I don't consider myself as be recoil sensitive either.
I really have the most fun when the tactical guys show up. They look in awl as I
plink not only the 25 yard steel silhouette, but the 50 & 75 yard chicken, pig and
turkey with open sights. Now if I had the scope on the (686 6.5 incher) I could ring
100 yard Ram.
38 Special - is there anything else?
Me, I'm facinated with em & the 45's, 44's, 9mm's, 223's, 06's, 7.62 by everythings, on and on and on.............
But my little ole charge of 3.8gr of powder really adds up in savings. Or [cough] allows me to displace even more lead down range, I should say.
Now whats a contender? Is that something thats hosted by Sugar Ray?

Wasn't stirring the pot at all! Look on many, many boards, and the smallest cartridge the macho guys will admit to loading and shooting is the .44 Magnum. Except for the cast boolits board, you'd think the various .32s and .38s didn't even exist!

A Contender is a single shot pistol that were made by the Thompson Center company. The barrels are interchangable and come in many calibers, I have from 221 Bireball to 45 Win Mag, with 30-30, and some other non pistol calibers barrels. Soma barrels are 10 inch and athers are 14 inch, there were some in 8 inch way back in the early Contender days. Before the Encore line replaced the Contender, there were some 16 inch barrels and carbine kits for the basic frame. I have a 223 Carbine kit, it is a barrel, shoulder stock and fore grip.
Many wildcat cartridges were turned into T/C Contenders, and there are several places that offered many heavy duty caliber barrels.
Here is one of the better know:
http://www.sskindustries.com/ssk.htm
Depending on your hunting skills and your pocket book, you can about hunt anything on the planet with a Contender. Me, I hunt ground hogs with mine. During handgun hunting season, I have a 357 Max and a 44 Mag setup to go dear hunting with.
Here is the T/C homepage: http://www.tcarms.com/
Here is about the Encore: http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/encore.php
This should give some idea of what a Contender is and what a hand cannon is all about.

Charley-
Probably a direct correlation to age for the most part. But we all have our favorites. I really have no good explanation of why I like 38 spl. other than I do fancy the wheel gun.
Jerry-
LOL... I was just being facetious. But while on the subject, I do prefer rifles/pistols with magazines/cylinders. Sometimes a quick second followup shot is necessary especially in my neck of the woods. Here it is quite hilly along with moderate to heavy thicket cover. Theres not many chances for a 75 yards shot, more like under 50 yrds unless you can hunt in a hay or tobacco field.
I too like busting them there whistle pigs, my first choice cal for them would be the 22-250, next choice would be either 25-06 or 223 featuring the Hdy Ballistic tips in a Rem BDL Hvy BBL or Colt Hvy blue label.
BTW, I didn't think you could hunt deer with anything other than a muzzle loader in Ohio.
Anyway, pistol hunting is quite different and a pleasant approach but I still always feel like I'm leaving something behind. Its nice and easy to pack up and down the mountain side for sure.
This will be the third season for me using a 629 topped with a 2X scope. Last spring I found this all leather shoulder holster to carry the 44 in. The heavy leather holster works great for hunting. It was bargan priced at $35 at a pawn shop! It fits and hangs vertical about half way over the waiste line, over-top of my winter hunting attire rather nicely. My hunting loads are my cast 255g SWC atop 11.0g of Unique.
Oh yea, I recently picked up a near new 1895 GG in 45-70 that I'll be taking out I'm sure. That 350 grainer SWC outta work in the thicket.
Going forward I'll be using this revolver in the annual silhouette match coming up next month. Hunting season is getting closer.............
I have enough ammo loaded to last me until next spring or later, likewise for the others. I frequent the range every weekend when the temps are near 50, unless I need to tweek or try something new.

I just got back from doing some low-light shooting (dusk). From my blue steel Taurus 85, I was shooting 158 gr LSWC backed by Bullseye, Unique, W231, and Trail Boss to compare muzzle flash. It wasn't even close - Trail Boss won. [ 4.1 gr] I love that 38. It's in my pocket all the time, even when I've got my 1911. Next I'll work up a Trail Boss load in 45 ACP.

Sprue,
I like my 1895 in 45-70, I use a Ranch Dog Bullet in 350 grain area and some time a 405 grain bullet
http://www.ranchdogmolds.com/
Instead of a 223 or other light calibers, I will use my 45-70 on Coyotes, clean quick death with that caliber.

3.5 grains Titegroup, 158 lead SWC, and all the free range brass I can scrounge!
My Colts and S&W Model 10's eat 'em up like candy. Why pay $15 a box for .38 Special blasting ammo?

D'Rooster,
I am older that you and have a lady friend that is in her early 30s, she is here because of the life style that I have taken up. Artist out in the country, self sufficient, have most of the nice things from the city and our only crime is speeding. She works on her art, as well as working around the house, helps me with the crops, yesterday she was helping me building the new deck.
But she loves my Contender Super 14 in 44 Mag and she is getting to the point of being good with at 50 yards. If she gets board with that barrel, then she changes out ot the 357 Max Barrel, and shoots at G'Hog.

I own a Rossi Mod 88 SS 2" 5 shot revolver it's an accurate belly gun .I bought a supply of 38 special target ammo but I also have a S&W Mod 19 357 6" upgraded to TH,TT,TS .I have dies, brass & bullets. After retiring I thought I'd have all the time to reload & shoot not so, too many other issues interfered .I have bottom feeders but still like revolvers.
