AA #5 followed by titegroup.

AA #5 seems to give good velocities in most handgun rounds short of 44 mag.

I have been using IMR 700x for several years. I use it in .38 Special, .45 ACP, 9mm and lite 357's. It is also good in 12 ga. trap loads. It is fairly clean burning and seems to do well.

My questions is "Why isn't this powder used much by others?" I hardly ever see it represented in forums.

Am I missing something?

sunnyf16 there are lots of good powders that aren't well represented in loading manuals and forums. As an example I once used PB in 44 mag moderate loads. PB is an old powder and it in fact looks like granulated black powder.

What I like about it is that is bulky and a charge even a light one takes up most of the case. It burns very clean and gives consistant velocity and match winning accuarcy.

However you will not find much load data for it.

I use Unique for the .45LC and .45ACP, and AA#2I, and AA#5 for the .45 ACP's.

If I could have only one it would assuredly be Unique.  I have tried Titegroup in the .45ACP but the muzzleflash in the dark gives you away.

I keep hearing Unique is dirty, but it isnt any dirtier than Titegroup.  Besides, I clean my pistol every now and then, so Unique isnt a problem.

I only read the first few posts but - Unique - pretty much does it all for pistol.

Its the most economical too. Bullseye will work too but I like the Unique for lead due to the burn rate vs the alloy properties.

Something for Unique/Bullseye users to consider. . .If you switch to AA#5 or Titegroup, usually your velocity goes up.

The "burning dirt" aspect was one reason I hated it, but the way it hung up in my powder measure was unacceptable. I pretty much had to dribble every load in. I heard there are some powder throwers it works with, but I just changed powders. It was a hell of a lot easier and cheaper that way. Thank God I was only buying it a pound at a time!

Haven't had any metering issues with any of my powder throwers (i.e. the Lee cheapie, Lyman 55 or Dillon) regardless of the weight thrown.

Perhaps a static buildup issue. Bridging is also caused by the thrower adjustment settings on some measurer designs such as the Lyman # 55.
