I would like anyones imput on the most useful all around powder. I am on a tight budget and would like to get the most rounds for my $. I will be reloading .38s/.45 acp & 9mm. All with lead bullets and just for plinking fun. In other words I want to burn a lot powder and waste a lot lead; hey thats why we reload right.

I like red dot. It probably not the best for anything but works in everything. A pound goes a long way.

Flammable Dirt, known to some as Unique. Not the best in anything, but pretty good in everything

Unique and 4756.  These two powders will take care of all your needs for the small capacity cartridges you've mentioned.

I like the versatility of unique but I haven't bought any in about 6yrs because I hated how dirty it got everything. I read an article somewhere the other day that said it had been reformulated and was alot cleaner burning now. Is this just another marketing smokescreen or does anyone think its for real. I tried reddot for the 45acp but wasn't that impressed with it but did like it for 38s. Any bullseye fans out there?

Is there any practical difference between Bullseye & Red Dot?

I use the new Unique in all my 38 Spl loads with the Speer 146 gr and 44 mag middle of the book loads with the 250 gr Keith . I clean my handguns to often to worry about any residue it may leave . I love the accuracy from Unique and it will be my go to powder for medium loads as long as i load.

When I go to the range, I go through 3-400 rds of any one  caliber that I take, whether its .357 .45,or 9mm.

Haven't tried the new Unique, but the old stuff jamed up the extractor wheels and chambers after about 50 rounds  requiring a cleaning.

Even during action pistol matches, I found I had to brush out the cylinders every 2-3 loadings to insure I could load quickly with a  speedloader

I switched to W231 qnd noted a marked improvement +200 rds. With Universal Clays I do nothing  and then just clean when I get home. However I have about 16 lbs of W231 now and only about 3 lbs left of the Clays, so I will use the W231.

Shooters just shoting 50-100 rds at a session probably won't notice a difference

The reformulated Unique does burn cleaner. The old formulation was never an issue with me, even after 2 to 3 hundred rounds. I would have black dots on my arms, but my guns never bobbled.

Without a doubt - Unique. If you going to restrict yourself to one powder, it is the way to go!

I have Unique,Power Pistol and IMR4227 on the shelf.Unique doesn`t pattern  rounds worth a crap in my 357 Ruger BlackHawk.
I use Power Pistol in my 357mag,38 Special and 40 Smith case.
That is my most versatile powder.
I use a light dose of 4227 in my sons antique 32-20..
But Power Pistol wins hands down around  my loading bench..psst,Charley I felt bad and cleaned it up after you mentioned how dirty it was..lol:wink:

Yman don't get worried about buying the big cans. Loading the 44 special with 7 grs of unique a can will get you very close to 1000 rnds. Even the 45 colt at 9 grs will go about 700 rnds to the can.
