Thanks fellas!

No, I don't work for Smith, lol, I work in a foundry in the Maintenance Dept. I was the General Foreman and have recently switched to Planner. It's a lot less stressful

I've always been a big bore handgun nut so these were right up my alley and I just couldn't pass on them. Once I pick up the 4" model my collection should be complete, unless S&W comes out with another variation. I don't just collection them either, I shoot them every chance I get. The S&W 500 has been my favorite caliber now going on four years and it's really quite versatile.

That's a great addiction to have ! What I really don't unstand is why I haven't hunted with any of my big bore handguns and taken game. I have carried them with me while hunting with a rifle but never shot at elk, deer, antelope, etc. . I have the 460 S&W, 454 Ruger SRH, Super Blackhawk in 44 mag and a TC contender in 35 Rem. as far as large handguns. 45 autos,357's etc. I almost got a 40 yrd. shot with my 454 in Wy. a couple years ago but it was a 4 point or better year and it was a 3 pt. He didn't even know I was there. Went javalina hunting in Az. a couple times with 44 mag and 35 Rem. . No shots. Go all the time archery season and get one most of the time.Something's wrong there ...

I've been hunting with handguns as long as I've owned them. The first year we had a handgun season for deer here in Ohio I used my .357 Desert Eagle and took a nice buck. Back in the early 90's when I went to Colorado on a mule deer and elk hunt I took my .270 rifle, .45-70 Contender and .44mag. I carried the rifle and Contender while I was hunting but I didn't have time to use the Contender so I had to rush a shot with my rifle. Either way I was happy to come home with a nice 4x5 mule deer.

Any time I get the chance to hunt and I can use a handgun I do. I like the challenge.

I'm taking the 460 again with me to Wy. and Ut. this year. Depends if I get drawn for anything in Az.,Nv. or N.M. . Got drawn for archery elk in Az. . Did get an additional cow elk tag in Wy.....Last year I could of had 150 yd. shot at some elk there. Still have Ca. elk, antelope and deer to apply for. That bighorn on my avatar is from Ca. ! I'm going to try to take something with my 460.  I can keep them in a 4 in. grp. pretty good at 100 yds. on 7 power. Haven't tried on paper beyond that, just rocks.

Hi All, new to the board. I just got the 460 last Christmas, been shooting it all summer. Had to get into reloading so I could shoot this. The load I found that I like to shoot is a 240gr Hdy XTP, WLRM primer, 42gr  W296. The book says it should be about 1700fps or so. I don't see the need to be shooting a hot load all the time, just because i can. This load shoots very well.

I hunt deer in Pa. and all I carry is a pistol. No scope, couldn't keep the one I had together, so it's just iron sites. I can put all 5 shots in a paper plate at 100yrds. I do practice to shoot like that, about 400 rounds this summer. This past hunting season I got a nice 5 pointer at 75yrds, one shot to the chest. He move about 30ft. When I went to dress him out there was nothing in his chest but jello, no lungs, half a heart, and about half the liver.

I see no need to carry a rifle, not that many shots are any farther than 100yrds. Besides, it's easier to carry a hand gun, both hands free. My son carries my Colt Anaconda 44mag. No deer for him, yet, but I have 2 with the 44mag, one was 120yrds, the other about 80. I really like hand gun hunting.

Good to have you with us Mike. I have hunted a few times with my .454 but I havent taken a deer with it yet. A lot of the areas I hunt are fields where 200+ yard shots are common. We are glad you joined us.

I don't think I'd be afraid of a 200yrd shot. It might not be perfict, but I'd hit it. I like hand gun hunting, but not everyone does, or can shoot well enough to shoot out that far. I think you have to shoot alot, kinda like bow hunting, you gotta practice alot to be able to hit what you want to. Just can't pick it up the day before hunting season and take it out.

I don't have a handgun in SW460mag I have a TC Encore 15" in 454 casull but learned not to fire full bore loads just reduced.I had Bullberry make me a 20" encore rifle barrel in 454 casull & had them rechamber it to SW460Mag so I can fire some ammo w/o injuring my bod.Magtech makes some 260gr jacketed flat point 454 casull ammo that has more recoil than the 460mag ammo in my rifle it stings to shoot it even with a recoil pad.I tried Ruger Super Redhawks in 454casull & 480 at Raahauges Shooting Sports Fair  in Norco learning they weren't fun to shoot. http://www.raahauges.com  to the sidebar for the fair coming up in June you can shoot all of the new weapons for a nominal fee it's well worth it been going to it for years.

Hi Roger!

You're probably trying to post photos from your hard drive. You need a host like Photobucket or Image Cave to upload your photos to. Once you sign up with one of them the instructions are pretty easy to follow. Best of all is they're free.
