Sounds stupid, doesn'tit? I have 5 wonderful cats, who are WELL aware Daddy does NOT want them on the reloading bench, ever. However, cat hair can be a floating, wispy thing. I wonder what one small, invisible hair, might do to powder performance, landing unnoticed in a cartridge in progress...

Would appear as though a field test is in order, AM.
Load one round with a single cat hair mixed in with the charge. Another round, hair free. Run'm over the chrony and see what you get.
I have three cats. They aren't allowed in the reloading / computer / gun room (much) but, as you well know, cat hair always follows where it's not supposed to. Never gave it a second thought weather a small amount of hair affected powder burn. Honestly, never was much worried about hair getting into the case in the first place. >> klallen

That may be a good idea...use a tough gun like a Mosin...
I do love my kitties, and the puppies, but the hair goes EVERYWHERE. Not one cat has set paw in my van, but there is cat hair in there.

My guess is that unless you put a lot of hair in the case it will have no effect. Black powder shooters use a cloth patch for round balls which in effect would be a large wad of cat hair. Some people that shoot reduced loads use kapoc as a filler.

I have had cat hair sticking out of a case around a 44 mag cast lead round, and nothing detectable!! It does like to stick to the bullet and case lube!!LOL! I would also think that in that instance, if the hair is there, there is a microscopic space around it that could on Mars and during a full moon, let moisture or water vapor past it. However unlikely, it may could possible happen!!

I Used to use a little peice of cotton ball on top of bullseye powder loads in 38 spcl. and 45 auto a long time ago because of what I heard about the powder being away from the primer and detination are something could happen. I never had a problem with or without the cotton. I'm sure it would of amounted to more than some cat hairs. It's going to burn instantly and I can't imagine it causing much change in pressure if at all. But who am I to say ?

I've used dryer lint to retain the powder at the correct end of the cartridge, and it does effect the velocity. Without it, the cartridge's will still fire but the velocity spread is all over the place....dryer lint = more consistant powder burn = lower SD/ES numbers across the chronograph.
Now stuffing the whole cat into the cartridge might be fun, but the barrel wear would possible be too extreme to get consistant velocities , but I guess anything is worth trying once. Where did the neighbors cat go.......

Unless you are using a 50 cal. once they get about two feet from the muzzle there's not enough flash to actually burn the hair. Although at about 4 feet, the patch from a round ball ML might smolder a little in the wound channel. RD

S'OK. I love my kitties, but I have a brother with the "101 uses for a dead cat" book, too. Another friend of mine,20+ years ago, found a dead cat stiff in the road. He tossed it in the back of his truck, drove out into the desert, then used it's stiff legs like a target stand in the sand, and used it as a practice target for his M-1 Garand.
But yes, I do love my kitties, all 4 of them, (number 5 is no longer with us as of yesterday).

okay, here's Big Dude knockin at my garage door. 15.5 ft. 170+lbs. The Monitor Lizard id "Snoopy". He gets into everything. He's a little bigger and fatter than that old pic. Had him for almost 13 yrs. My Lab mix and him grew up together and get along great. When they were little, the the pup would pull him by the tail. The lizard would crawl over the top of the dog when laying down. The don't play that crap anymore. If the lizard gets to the dog dish before I pick it up, the dog backs off and lets him have it. The bad part is he has no fear of dogs. I let him out of his cage everyday when I get home from work or on weekends and he goes straight to the side of the house to sun himself. I know, I'm weird !
