I have an old S&W 57, dug up out of semi retirement. I have always used the Remington 210 load on about everthing I use a hangun for. Never loaded for this gun as the factory round has been very accurate and fast enough, but has become very expensive.  Anyone have a favorite recipe for a deer load?

I have a model 57 with an 8 3/8 inch barrell, the load i use is 21.6 gr. winchester 296 powder, 210 gr. Hornady XTP. Federal 150 Primer. Winchester cases. Bullet seated  and crimped at the cannalure. This is a below max load and is safe in my gun, I use it for everything.

I've had fantastic luck with BlueDot in all my 41 loads.  The only problen is, with max ( or maybe a little hot) loads the pressure spikes in hot weather (like 105) when the cylinder warms up.  The third forth and fifth shots are ever increasingly hot.  If you can find some Speer 220gr half jacket bullets, they are great.  Seem to be out of production now.  Too bad.

Just my 2 cents.

I've sent a couple thousand of them down range at those funny steal animals.

havent loaded for my 41 in over 20 yrs but went back to my notes and found that i must of liked 11g of blue dot with a 220g lead wadcutter (had a star beside that one).  took this same bullet up to 14g of blue dot and saw excess pressure.  i dont see where i chrono any of these loads.  i did manage to take a deer with my 41 had small spike offer himself at about 20 yards.  was using a 210 grain jacketed bullet from sierra for that one with 20.2g of H110 behind it.  That was my hunting load i worked up.

do your due diligence on blue dot loads before trying them. i believe alliant recently released a warning stating blue dot should not be used in any 41 mag loads.

fwiw... i am about to begin loading my new 41 mag blackhawk, and will be looking for the nuclear option because i want to use it on deer, elk, and bear defense. sure am jealous of you fellas w/ the smith 57's and 58's... awfully hard for me to find one around here.

thanks for the heads up on that dakota, i went to alliants web page and sure enough dont use blue dot for 41 mag.  Ive got a bunch of stuff loaded from years ago i wonder how much of it has blue dot in it.  got me wondering if i need to pull some bullets and check.

they also list 357 mag  with a 125g bullet to not use blue dot.

Hey, Ruger makes a fine gun. I have a 41 magnum Ruger Redhawk and love it. It has a 7 1/2 inch barrel with hunting v notch and gold bead hunting sights. I Have killed it's share of deer and several pigs. I find the silhouette bullets in 220 gr to be best for hogs. As well as downrange steels.

Will look up some of my favorite loads and get back. I think I have a load with a 210 gr that clocks at about 1400 fps.

Sorry about that, it is a load for a 170 gr JHP sierra. Using H110 powder at 23.4 grains and using winchester large pistol primers I get 1350 fps. And this is an outstanding load for deer and gives exceptional expansion.

Another good, but heavier load is the Sierra 210 JHP sitting on 20.7 grains of w296 for a 1200 fps delivery.  Now that's one serious chunk of lead clocking at a decent velocity.  Does the job nicely.

Now for just popping around with the 41, I use a 215 gr swc over 17.7 grains of IMR4227 at a comfortable 940 fps.

I hope these work for you.

I shoot these in my Ruger Redhawk and even though the first one is warm, I never load what I can't read about in a reputable loading manual.

Make several loads in and around the optimum max and find which works for your specific gun the best. I am sure with some variances you can find a powerful and accurate load that is just right for your gun.
