Pretty neat find. I've got to say, though, I did a quick search in my references and online, and could turn up very little about the cartridge. It seems you can turn down the rim on .38 Specials and form your own. Nothing from CH4D, nothing from Buffalo Arms.
At least turning down rims isn't too difficult.

Oddly enough, there was a guy on the High Road who posted about having an AMU in his 38Spl brass, and what to do with it. Interesting caliber.

Yeah, saw that in a search! Apparently the .38AMU is about as dead as a cartridge can be.

The 38 A.M.U. for(Army Marksmanship Unit)was introduced for the 1964 Army National Match. The 38 AMU was used in special 1911 pistols made by Colt with Drake Slides and were only used for the 1964 National Match.

case on a super is .005 larger dia than a special.wonder how well that will work.i had a colt conversion to super years ago before it became popular to make the major power factor required for some competitions.it was made to headspace off the rim not the case mouth.with the rim only .02 dia larger than the body it was a pitiful setup.later they began to headspace off the mouth and it worked well.i got rid of the barrel.should have rechambered it to 38 clarke.Last edited on Fri Apr 11th, 2008 05:47 PM by wheezengeezer

your right about the 38 super being hard to get to shoot. 5 years ago I changed the old barrel to a Bar Sto and it really helped. I could do that again and it would be cheaper but it is neat as it is. Thanks Irish JJ

The .38 AMU was a rather ingenious solution to a non-existent problem. Both Colt and S&W came up with commercially produced autopistols that fired .38 Special wadcutter ammo - complete with rims - without too much problem. (The ones I have - one each, he said with his offhand, snobby voice - don't have any problems as long as I load the bullets flush with the case.)
About the only thing to do to shoot this pistol is to turn off the rims and cut an extractor groove in .38 Special cases.
.223 cases are almost the same size at the head and extractor groove. To convert those, you'll have to shorten, trim to proper length and then inside ream to seat bullets. And the volume will be smaller than usual.
