I was cleaning out the basement and found three bags of shot from my shot gun reloading days ( about 25 years ago)
Could this lead be melted down and cast into WC for my .38?
Has anyone ever done this?
Thanks

| 38 spec wadcutters will typically be shot at velocities low enough that recycled shot should be more than hard enough.however, your shot is worth more per lb than lead

JRB..Check the price of lead shot before you melt it down.. Besides, lead shot by itself wouldn't make very good bullets without adding some alloying material like tin to harden the mix. If the shot is old enough, it may contain arsenic, and you might want to avoid the fumes when melting.
I may be in error about the shot containing arsenic, but someone on this forum may know for sure...

| I've read the same thing about the arsenic. I would not take the chance. I'd peddle it.

| tin wont do much to make a harder bullet when melting down shot.it just makes it fill the mould better.arsenic in the shot is there to help the shot harden in an alloy with antimony.wheel weights also have arsenic.use adequate ventilation and no problem.will get more shootin for the money if you can do some tradin. wheezengeezer and 3006user,
I appreciate the info.
I have 75 lbs of shot and looked up the price. It is not worth its weight in gold, but a lot closer to gold than I thought it was. I think the idea of selling or trading sounds like the way to go.
Thanks

JRB,
Have you checked the Antimony content of the shoot? If it is high antimony, you may want to alloy the shot with some Tin and Lead to make your bullets with.
Just a thought,
Jerry

Miestro_jerry,
The sacks say 5% antimony. The tin content is not given.
I would think that would be hard enough.
Thanks

JRB,
Your shot is probably antimony and lead. But throw in some wheel weights and you could have a decent alloy for CBs.

there is no tin in the shot the arsenic is used when it is dropped.
it acts like a surface tensioner to help the shot go round.
if you want your 38's for target loads up to 950 fps or so.
you can mix it 50/50 with pure lead and add 1% tin it will make nice bullets.
or you can just throw some in your ww's and tin mix about 4-1.
or use them as are with some tin if you use 2% tin you will end up with
almost exactly the composition that most commercial casters use.
but you could just trade it for some ww's and a bit of tin which would fit your application better.

JRB,
Do you have a Grainger near you? They have a blow out on Lead Free Solder:
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1ZHW2
If you order online, they don't charge shipping. I am also a member of the Farm Bureau and I get other discounts with Grainger.
This is the best price you will find on Tin at the moment. I bought 30 pounds of the stuff total.
Jerry
