I've been familiar with rifles and their handloads for many years, but am new to pistols. I'm going to assume that not enough knowledge crosses over from rifles to pistols for me to be comfortable with what I know. Well, with my knowledge, anyway. So before I inadvertantly blow my head, hands, or otherwise important parts off, I'd better get some advice on some things first. Today's dilemna is freebore, in particular.
Would someone enlighten me as to the pro's,con's, and possible dangers of adding .0045 AOL to spec AOL on a .45 ACP Gold Dot 230gr JHP? With that stretched AOL I'm still jumping .0095+ to my lands. On my rifles, i'd have to throw up if I had that much freebore, but I have no idea how it works with pistols. I could add another .0010 on top of the .0045, but beyond that I'll have magazine probs.
Any advice? Opinions? Pictures of your wives?

I think I know what you are saying. . .
My opinion is that jump to lands is of no impact in pistols, except regarding reliability. I have had very short bullets loaded too long stick in the lands and the bullet pull out when I racked the slide. . .Yes, stupid!
As far as accuracy goes, I just don't think this is an issues in pistols. To me, it is much more important to find a length which feeds, ejects(loaded) and doesn't hit the slide stop, etc.
Regarding feeding, IMO, longer feeds better. Also rounded bullets feed better. A heavy crimp keeps the bullet in place during feeding
I use a LEE FC Die to set the final size and crimp.
