I generally figure about 500 rounds to break in a good 1911, most others I do 200 to 500 rounds.

I find that the phone book test is pretty good, but I like having those two litre pop bottles 2/3 filled with water and then throw them in the freezer. You will notice a dramatic difference in eanergy being expended by bullets with the frozen pop bottles.

About the "dowel & Dremel" trick... More good guns have been ruined by Dremel addicts than just about any other cause. Do NOT remove the support the .45 cartridge web needs for safe operation. Polish only, unless you REALLY know how much of the hood to remove and where to remove it. There's great danger potential here. Just a word to the already wise.

Exactly so. Make all rubs minimal, then take it out and try it out. As dirtkicker says, it doesn't take much metal removed to put you into new barrels or frames. Strictly a cut and try deal, a tiny bit at a time. No sharp edges.

I have some discontinued Speer 200gr JHP aka flying dixie cups, they were a long time favorite of the LA Sheriffs Dept, when I told a retired sheriff I had some we did some trading as he loads them for self preservation in their day they were real stoppers.

i loaded some 185 gr JHC's several years ago at 1050 fps.they really expanded.thought that they might have a hard time punchin thru heavy clothing.nowdays,in the big calibers i prefer a non expanding cast.them gold dots sure sound good though!

Yesterday I ordered 2 paks on magtech 45 auto ammo from midway, they're 165gr +P solid copper jhp with serrations near the tip, the magtech site has pics of their copper ammo in 45auto,44 rem mag,454casull & 500s&w with the petals opened up.Since I'm in CA I called magtech to request they get their ammo approved for use in the expanded condor zone so we can carry it in our pistols for use it on varmints.

Haven't you heard how toxic copper is? Especially when it's injested at - say - 1200 or more feet per second. I'm sure the CA legislature is or will soon be aware of it and feel compelled to act.

Man, I absolutely LOVE Dremel addicts. I've bought some great guns over the years for next to nothing because some idiot "polished" them a little...like removing 1/8 of an inch of material! Usually a couple of new parts and I'm back in business.

I shoot the bonded 230g Golden Sabre's exclusively in my Springfield 1911 V16 Longslide. They were the bullet of choice by the FBI SWAT team after extensive testing. Of course my Springfield V16 is a 45 Super so I load them to 1150 fps. They are very accurate in my gun and I've had no feeding problems at all.

One question we never asked in this thread is "Defense against what?"
Of course, the assumption is/was that the thread referred to other hooman beans.
But for those who must work alone around large critters that might put you in a dangerous situation, boolit needs might be a little different. I am referring to bulls, ornery cows, bison, and even semi-broke horses.
In this kind of situation I have to go with the old timers: a hard-cast, lead, genuine Keith-style boolit of 250-260 grains stoked to the max in a .45 Colt caliber revolver. This boolit is a terrific penetrator and when push comes to shove a great killer. In a Ruger these loads, if cast hard enough or used with GCs, can be pushed to between 1300-1400FPS safely. That is one helluva put-downer on something big enough to need 'em. Of course, I am straying a bit from the question, which asked about 1911s. Sorry about that. Just wanted to add these notes about .45 boolits as a whole class of flying objects.
Also, no ol' west BG (prior to about 1975) was ever put down by a cavernous jacketed HP. But boot hills all over are full up with guys who went down as the result of collisions with big solid lead projectiles.
Just something to think about.

Several years back I read an article in Handguns Magazine about a rancher who used a hard cast heat treated 180gr bullet in a Ruger 357 on a large trap tripping livestock killing coyote, the bullet entered a front shoulder & went diagonally thru the yote exiting the opposite rear hip killing it instantly.I contacted Cast Performance in Wyoming got some load data and bought their bullets for my 4 5/8" barreled 41mag & 45colt Ruger Black Hawks , that's what I load using H 110 & W 296. CorBon used to load 41mag 265gr Hard Cast Cast Performance bullets: vel 1325 fps & energy 1033 Ft lbs I was told it was an excellent griz stopper by a corbon tech who carried the same 41 BH I have.He also told me they used Ruger BH's to test some of their loads so they're strong revolvers. Rem Golden Sabre or Speer 200gr jhp (discontinued)are my favorites in my 1911's.The bullet I wanted is the Sierra 165gr JHP designed by the owner of CorBon for 45acp but it's not for sale to reloaders.

The Golden Saber is an impressive design. I've loaded them in the 230 grain and 185 grain versions. Both shoot very well in all my .45 caliber guns, autos and revolvers alike - even the .45 Schofield Open Top clone.
I still like the Winchester notched 230 grain hollow point, mostly because I've seen it drop a pretty big muley in his tracks. I don't have first-hand living target experience with the Golden Sabers, but I'll bet they're great performers, given a good load/platform combination.

They are hard to find and expensive when you do but I have both my 1911's loaded with the real Black Talons. (Black box per 20) They have all my attention and I buy them when I can find them and afford them.
