My pet loads have developed over the years, and I'm resistant to change.
But I'm trying to incorporate my powders from 10 to just 2 or 3.
Buy kegs of powder, save money, shoot more. I win.
My original load (Warning: It's hot, it's a +p load. It wasn't originally, but the books got more and more conservative on unique as time went on...)
7.0 grains unique, HTP-HP 200 grain good for about 900 FPS in my .45s, VERY soft shooting, chews out the X-ring in all my .45s. (Yeah, I'm used to 10mm, and magnum snubby revolvers, so maybe it does recoil, I think it's soft shooting...)
I guess my question is, would 8.0-8.5 grains of power pistol be an acceptable substitute for 7 grains of unique in my pet load?
Or should I just keep a pound or two of unique around?
Muzzle flash is not a concern.

I have never tried Power Pistol but have used a lot of unique in the 45 acp Colt Gold Cup back in the 70's. I would have to say it would be hard to beat unique in the 45 acp, very accurate and hard to double charge without being aware of it. The only thing i did was change the recoil spring to the 18lb because of the hot loads. I guess you will have to try Power Pistol and let us know how it works.

bea175,
I have a stock Colt Gold Cup Series 70. Would an 18 pound recoil spring be what I need for shooting factory hardball without banging up the gun? I have no idea what Colt supplied these guns with from the factory. Thanks in advance. billt

The Gold Cup is supplied with a 14 lb spring, the Goverment Model with a 16 lb and the Combat Commander with the 18 lb spring. With your Gold Cup i would use the 18 lb.

BEA: do you know this spring weight for a fact. My series 70 government models reference the exact same recoil spring as my series 70 Gold Cups and I have been shooting my Gold Cups with lots of hardball for the past 30+ years without any signs of them getting beat up.
The "National Match" (pre-series 70) used a hand lightened slide and should not be used for hardball, but Colt has never referenced any problems with the series 70 shooting hardball.
I show 6.8gn Unique as being the lowest "max" charge with a jacketed 200gn bullet. Max historically has been somewhere around 7.1-7.4gn.
The same bullets with Powder Pistol, which is not a powder that has worked as well for me as Unique in the .45, shows a max of 7.4-7.5gn and a starting load of 6.7gn.
Hopes this helps.
PS: If I could have just one powder for every handgun, it would be Unique (maybe Universal, but I have never used it so don't know).Last edited on Mon Aug 9th, 2010 02:50 AM by noylj

If your looking to cut your powders down to just a few, try Titegroup. I have loads for .38spl/.357mag, .40S&W, and .45acp. Accurate and works well in all cases and meters nicely too! I use a powder cop die when reloading in addition to me checking approximately every tenth round by weight. Gives me a nice visual reference and piece of mind. I have used unique also and its a good powder. I just didnt like having so many different powders.

Billt, Colt supplied the standard govt. model 1911 with a 16-16 1/2 pound recoil spring because that is the proper weight for factory hardball ammo. Your 200 gr. load doesn't generate any more recoil energy than the 230 hardball.

I have built two Rowland 460's one on a Springfield and one on a Colt and I have a 10mm Delta Elite, and also built a 400 on a old 70's Colt. Used between a 18 to 20 lb spring on each but more for the cycle than to protect the pistol....
Never had any issues with any of the pistols, however I'm sure you know about the change Colt made in the Receiver when they developed the 10mm Delta Elite with "real" 10mm rounds, not the "wimp" stuff of most factory loads today (anything under 1100fps in 10mm. It prevented the Receivers from cracking....

It just so happens that, in the last 5 days, I've started loading 8.5 of Power Pistol under 200gr LRN Lasercasts.
I haven't chrony'd them from the pistol yet (been busy), but I'd suggest 8.0 or so. 8.5 SHOULD be, according to most of my load data, arround 1,000fps from a pistol.
It's 1325 from my Thompson. :)
It's a nice shooting load, my previous test load threw leftover Blue Dot at me while tossing the empty case out, no "face-spattering" with the Power Pistol load.
Best of luck to ya.

Oh my goodness. I started this one 5 years ago, and it got resurrected. (I wonder if there's a Lazarus icon?)
I never compared them directly, and my aim isn't good enough to compare them now, as I don't get to the range anywhere near enough to do any side by side comparos.
I'm trying to get in shape now, and my weight machines are taking up the prime real estate in my basement.
Maybe next spring.
