bea175,                                                                                                                           I hacve a Ruger Super Redhawk in 9 in. That I now and then hunt with . I found H11o to be the most accurate. I have tried 240,250,260 and 300 gr. bullits. The Hornady 300 w/30.6 grs is what I settled on. Accurate and near max. 36.0 grs. with the 240 gr. . I have a 1.5x4 Burris scope on it. I bought on of the new S&W 460 XVR revolvers in 8 in. (w/muzzle brake). I mounted a Burris 3x7x32 scope on it. It's a handful !!! I don't think it recoils that much more the the Ruger though. Mostly because od the muzzle brake and the weight of it which I think is 74 oz. plus the scope. I haven't been able to better the accurcy of the Hornady factory 200 gr. ammo though. I didn't use it on any hunts this year in Ca.,Az,Ut. or Wy. I took it to Wyo. with me and didn't have it on me when I could have used it for a 65 yd. shot on a nice buck. Used my .300 Ultra Mag. Kinda close for it though but I love that rifle too !

I have a Raging Bull in 454 with a Leupold M8.  I havent taken anything with it, besides a cow that had to be put down. I usually load 240 grain XTP's with H110. I think I am going to switch to some X-bullets next time.

I've shot the 240 gr. xtp's but always thought they were a little light for the cartrige. Got better accuracy out of the 300 gr. As far as Barnes X bullets in pistols, the only ones I have tried were the 220 and I think they were .....I can't remember. I'm not at home. They were the next weight higher they made. Maybe 240 or 260. I only tried one load each with H110. It was in my S&W 460 XVR. The load/bullet wasn'r near as accurate as the Hornady factory 200 gr. load. You made me think though, I'm going to try the Barnes in my .454 Ruger . I have used Barnes bullets allot in my rifles. Their accuracy was never that great but the new Triple Shok in my 300 Ultra Mag is very accurate . I'm shooting 99.5 grs. of Hogdon's Retumbo w/ 180 gr. Triple shok in my Rem 700 stainless 26 in barrel . It chrono's around 3350 fps.. It's only 1.0 gr. from max and I can get .75 in. groups with a clean barrel. I searched no more for a load. It has a HS Precision stock on it and a Magna Brake (thank God !). The Magna Brake made it recoil about 40% less. Kicks about like a 30.06 with a 150 gr. bullet at most.I know the Magna Brake helped me shoot it more accuratly too.

I looked in my closet. I was way off. The Barnes XPB bullets were 200 and 275 gr. I think they make one in between also. They are expensive too for a box of only 20. You can get the Hornady 300 gr. box of 50 and 240 g, box of 100 for the same price or less and probably better accuracy.

I agree with you on the price. The barnes are very expensive. I just bought 80 647 grain X-bullets for my 50 cal. I had a buddy that recovered a 240 grain out of a 454 and it was amazing. It retained 100 percent of its weight and it more than doubled its diamater. The hornadys dont perform as well once they hit the game, IMO. I am going to try some and see how they work for me.

I have recovered a few 30 cal. 180 gr. and  7mm  140 and 160 gr. Barnes X bullets shot from a 300 Ultra Mag and 7mm mag rifles on game and they have never lost more than 5 grs. of wieght. Shot some into soft dirt at 100 yds. and they have been 100 % or lost a couple grs. of wieght. I love the new triple shoks. They have a new bullet coming out with a plastic tip I want to try. Now I'm curious what the Barnes bullets will wiegh if I shot them into soft dirt with my 454 and my S&W 460. Expensive test ! I agree with about the Hornadys on game. At least in my 300 RUM the bonded interlock 180 and 150 gr. I tried blew all to hell when they hit deer. Probably because of the Muzzle vel. was 3350 and 3600 fps. The Nosler Accubonds did the same thing. The Swift Scirroco 180 gr. wasn't too bad but nothing can beat the Barnes X. Sorry for being so long winded all the time !

Mountaineer;

Here's another option, just to keep ya awake ya know.  There's this thing called the .475 Linebaugh.  The .480 Ruger is the light load stuff for it, just like .44 Special is for .44 magnum.

Hornady 6th shows the Linebaugh to be capable of propelling the 325 gr XTP to 1550 fps in the 7.5" barreled Freedom Arms test gun.  Or, if you need to, you can go up to 1350 fps with the 400 gr XTP.

Speer shows a max velocity of 1429 fps with its 325 Gold Dot and 1383 with the 400 gr Gold Dot.  The Speer data specifically cautions not to load lighter than their listed start loads.  The loads were also developed in a Freedom Arms gun, but with a 6" barrel.

Decisions, decisions!!

I haven't heard MOUNTAINEER talk about his big bore handgun purchase for a while now.  Be interested to know what he chose to do.

Good call with the .475, CB.  Certainly not a bad option if you're looking for a powerful handgun cartridge.  GunBroker happens to have two NIB Magnum Research BFR's ready to buy for $750 right now.  Real affordable way to get into a Linebaugh.  Amd I believe BILLT has enjoyed his BFR's.  Would imagine you'd be shelling out $1500 or more for a NIB Freedom Arms.

Looking forward to hearing from MOUNTAINEER.  See what he did and all.  >>  korey

Has anybody heard of a T.C. Contender barrel for the new 460 S&W yet ? I have the XVR and love it but think it would be great in a TC 14 in. . Has anybody used a 454 Casull in a TC 14 in. ? Have a Super Redhawk in 9 in. but was also wondering how it was in a 14 in. . The lagest caliber I have fired in a TC is my .35 Rem. and .44 mag.. Thanks.

I hunt with my Taurus Raging Bull in 454 Casull.  Very accurate gun.  I took a bear with it this year right in my back yard.  My load is a 300 Gr Nosler Partition and H110.

I was at the shot show in ORL and got to see the whole line up of Puma Model 92 lever action rifles.  I think it would do wonderfully.  You would probably be able to see muzzle velocity in the 2000 ft range with handloads.  I wish they would chamber a lever rifle in 460 S&W.
