I have a pet load using a Precision Delta 147gr. FMJ TC bullet for IDPA. For the most part i've been using VN-330 and it has great accuracy, meets power factor, and excellent recoil control.

However, all of my local shops do not carry VN-330 powder and I only can pick it up from time to time when I go to an area gun show. I do however have a good deal of Win 231 powder but haven't seen much data with it for 147gr. loadings.

Anyone have any data for a starting load using:

Precision Delta 9mm Luger 147gr. FMJ TC

Various 9mm Luger brass

CCI 500 Small pistol primers

Thanks in advance!

Pumpgunner.Usually those heavier bullets in .355 are used in a 38 super, but I have seen some commercial loads in 9mm..

Unique is very close in burn rate to W231 ( Hodgon shows it right next to W231.)

None of my manuals list W231 and 147-150 gr bullets, but they show 3.5 gr of Unique as starting loads. I belive that would be safe for you.

BTW,I have a few thousand 150 gr FMJ , .355, 9mm bullets that I have no use for,  as I  have a light weight 9mm Star. I'llmake you agood deal onnthem .Shipping would be only about $9.50 or what ever the Post Office Flat Rate box is now days. PM me if interested

http://www.gsgroup.co.za/burnrates.html  unique is somewhat slower than ww231 in my experience.ww231 would be more suitable for lighter loads.unique would be very close to vn330.

Pumpgunner, for what it's worth, I recently loaded some 9mm luger 147 grain Hornady XTP/HP with 4.0 grains of Unique. The result, a nice "punch" for recoil. It was pretty sweet. Not sure how the Hornady's would match up with the bullet that you are using but it seemed to be a nice combination.

I have a 15th edition Winchester manual (.pdf). Shows 231 under 147gr cast from 3.3 to 3.5gr. 29kpsi to just over 32kpsi. 865-905fps. 4" barrel.

I believe the folks thoughts above to be valid as well. Mine were similar but found this load too.

i have been working on cast loads with 147 grainers the second best powder have found so far is 571 ( but it's still a work in progress)my winchester pamphlets do not list the 231 with 147's except for lead cast where it has the lowest velocity of any of the powders listed WAP has the highest followed by 571 , with the 147 fmj 571 has the highest velocity ( but i'm not after that as i'm working on subsonic loads )from my winchester data i'd reccomend the WAP or the 571 if u can find it 3rd best seems to be WSF ( at least with winchester powders umm havent tried the super comp yet but believe it's faster powder)

WAP ( soz i thought it was there ) but that is with cast .with jhp's it's a tie between 571 and super field
with fmj's it's 571( listed @5.5 start 6. max fps listed is 880 and 960 respectively winchester data ) so far i have found better accuracy with the 571 than wap but if u can stand to cram it in there blue dot is a strong contender ,it'll actually add very few fps over ur v-n330 but it also drops the pressure a bit ,herco is more in the middle velocity wise but a shade lower on the psi ,from gleaning several places it seems that v-n350 actually is the fastest fps wise
