I'm delving more into IPSC with my Springfield 1911 and I am looking for suggestions for a load which will produce the least recoil whilst still remaining very accurate.

I've got loads worked up for typical plinking and some for personal defense, but those were easy since they came out of a book with slight modification. Any help you can give would be appreciated

Thanks,
-Tex

Several years ago (more than 15) friend and I shot IPSC and both came up with 230g semi wads with 6.2 of Unique as our best load for target. Then about 2 years ago the friend got back into competition and like me could not remember the specific loads we used. He worked up the load and came up with above as his best. Well I also got back into loading and some competition and found my old data and it is what I listed above. I also used a 230g round ball with great success. The friend used a modified 1911 and I used a smith 4561 with these loads.

I don't shoot IPSC anymore but I do shoot IDPA.  When I was shooting IPSC I used a Springfield Trophy Match .45.  I used a 200 gr semi wadcutter hard lead bullet with  AA #2 for about 800 fps. (Check your manual for powder charge).

For IDPA I use a Ranier 200 gr round nose plated bullet with 4.0 gr of Clays.  I'm not sure if this makes major but you can check your manual foe velocities and do the math.  The swc's are a litlle more accurate (not enough to worry about)  but the plated bullets make gun cleaning much easier.

I was told by a friend that Tightgroup powder burns cleaner than anything he has used.  I bought a lb. of it but haven't tried it yet.

Good luck and I hope you have as much fun working up these loads as I do.  THe possibilities are endless.

Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed that about Tite Group. It's proved to be a decent powder IMHO across a pretty wide range of auto pistol and straight-wall revolver cartridges that I've used it with.

In the 80s and 90s I shot a lot of IPSC in our club in Texas.  I used WW 231 with an H & G 200 gr SWC and 5.6 grs or thereabouts.   I always made major with this load.  Sometimes I would back off to about 5 grs for practice...I always found that WW 231 was very clean burning and it had a softer report than Bullseye or Unique.  I am planning to try some more of the same load and also to try some of the newer Accurate No 2 which is a slightly better powder ballistically.  The Accurate No 2 is very close to the same case capacity as the WW 231...At my age I don't intend to start back into IPSC but still enjoy shooting at our club...I would be more into Bowling Pins or Plate matches now! I still like the 45 ACPs but also shoot a G -19 some and occasionally a revolver or two...I always have an open mind to anything new so feel free to advise me of any new powders or techniques.  As always never take loading data for granted until you work up gradually to the load!....bootman

I just bought a jug of Ramshot True Blue at a gun show last week. It seems to have utility across a wide range of calibers and bullets, particularly the heavier lead bullets in the .4x diameters. Shot some in my Springfield 1911 A-1 under 230grain FMJs the other day. Found it to be clean burning and snappy, but without pressure signs in primer or case. It's a very fine-grained spherical powder, so it meters consistently accurate charges.

Jury is still out on lead bullet loads - haven't rolled any with it yet - but most of the data Ramshot publishes for this powder is for lead.

Cast lead bullets work very well as long as you stay under 1000 fps...Leading will be a minimal amount...I always use a Lewis lead removal patch but one of my shooting buddies never did.     It seems the lead never piles up much but just stays the same.  At least that is the way I observed it...anyway lead is a lot cheaper than jacketed...I like the Lewis lead removal tool..It is just a rubber grommet with a brass patch that removes the lead with a little solvent or wd-40...No harder than cleaning the barrel with a brass brush...I use the H & G 68 SWCs with the lube ring.....bootman
