I have an old aluminum .38 snubbie that does well with NON +P .38 Winchester 110 gr. Silvertips. I cannot find the Silvertip .38 bullet, as a component, anywhere.
Does anybody have a pet load that simulates the .38 non +P Silvertip? I want to be able to load these up if this particular ammo dries up, either by company choice or because of the impending political decisions by our leaders.
My criteria: Decent expansion with some penetration without +P pressures, for self-defense use and snubbie pistol defensive ranges (not more than 15 yards).
Thank you in advance for any ideas.

For defensive uses I would strongly recommend using factory ammo. There are many non-P+ that will do the job.

Dirtkicker, I agree - as long as factory ammo is available and affordable.
That very well may not last. Then, I won't concern myself with some lawyer taking me to court in the event of my having to protect my family. My goal is to start loading everything that I can, or be prepared to, in the event of a shutdown of ammo sales.
Case in point - forgetting about limits on Internet orders and interstate shipping of ammunition, both of which are under constant attack - I recall just a couple of months ago when our own Fish and Game hierarchy were in bed with the folks who tried to take ammunition off the shelves of gun stores and sporting goods outlets. They did so using the premise that gunpowder was a dangerous explosive. For a while, every gun store owner held their breath. It took the fight of a swarm of angry and alerted gun owners to put the kibosh on that quietly executed and unannounced legal maneuver.
So the question remains - what can I find that will approximate the excellent Silvertip loads that are so far available?

I understand your point of view, John. It's one we are ALL going to have to deal with in the not-too-distant future.
Actually, though, as jjb points out, you don't really need much true "defensive ammo." Buy a few boxes, carry them, but do not shoot them beyond a very few familiarization rounds. THEN, duplicate the ballistics as closely as you can for your practice/range reloads. Some time with a good reloading manual or two would solve that problem.
Good luck and let us know what you come up with!

Dirtkicker and JJB2, your points are well taken. Actually, I am moderately stocked with standard pressure 110 gr. Federal .38 HydraShoks and the aforementioned .38 Silvertips for the 2" .38. But there are other calibers and issues that I am also addressing for the sake of an extended family; and the funding is shrinking, especially since our gubmint got overly speculative and generous in the recent Fannie Mae et all fiascos.
So I want to add to my inventory with some reloads that are in fact cheaper and similar in performance. I was hoping that somebody had already addressed this, so that I'm not re-inventing the wheel.
For starters, I would say that I had tentatively settled on Hornady XTP, since it appears that it has a wider latitude of velocity in which the bullet is designed to open up properly than other brands such as Gold Dot. Gold Dot was a brilliant innovation designed, it seems, for very specific velocities for each round, to do very specific things.
I think that XTP is probably the best bullet choice, and I load several pistol calibers and a few rifle loads with this excellent round.
I DID finally find Silvertip bullets - the component - at (duhh) the Winchester site! But I don't know what proprietary powder that they use to obtain just the right velocity to perform as they do.
FYI, my round I am considering so far for my 2" aluminum S&W 12-3 Airweight is:
Hornady XTP 110 gr. bullet pushed by 5.2 gr. Bullseye, around 1000 fps in a 6" tube per the Hornady manual (6th Edition). I have not yet purchased the bullets.
I have loaded, and like, a Speer load for practice and what I suspect is a similar load, but I don't hear dramatic things about the Speer standard hollowpoint for self defense:
125 gr. Speer #4013 UCHP, R-P brass,
5.7 gr. Unique, WIN WSP Small Pistol primers,
est. 980 fps 6 in bbl (not chrono'd for my 2");
COAL 1.435 inch; roll crimp
The above load is consistent and does expand some, but I have not yet run the famous denim over media test, yet, since I used to rely on factory loads for concealed carry. Now, of course, it is becoming an issue of importance. My plan is to stockpile a significant amount of rounds (somewhere), and I don't want to pay store prices.
