I have found a very light load for plinking. It's also a good load to use when introducing the 44mag to a new magnum shooter. I have been using this for 10 years. Fairly accurite. 850-890 FPS
Lazercast Lead 44 Cal. 240g SWC .431
9.0 Grains Unique Powder.

Funny, most of the time when Unique is mentioned, foks come out of the woodwork to tell you how "dirty" it is. Most of the time, it turns out they have never even USED it, just parroting what some gunwriter said. I've used Unique in .44 Mag and .44 Special ( and most every other handgun cartridge) for years and years. Always seems to work.

i have used 2 loads in my sbh for 26 years.the heavy is a 250K with 24 gr H110.the light load is a 200 gr rnfp flat base pushed by 7 gr W231.both are rcbs moulds.the light load does not require any sight adjustment when sighted in for the heavy load.

Lasercast bullets are excellent; but they are hard cast and probably unnecessary for a light load. And, let's face it - they aren't all that cheap.
My favorite moderate (target, plinking) load for my .44 Mags is:
240 gr. Magnus #701M -
Moly coated SWC Beveled Base hard cast, approx. 18-20 Brinnel,
per the manufacturer;
9.0 gr. Unique, CCI 300 Lg Pistol primers,
Winchester or Remington brass,
COAL 1.609 inches;
Actual Chrony chronographs at 83 deg. -
6" Taurus Stainless 1078fps;
Ruger Super BlackHawk 10.5" 1171 fps
The round is about 1" at 25 yards for both pieces, which is as good as I probably can shoot, and very pleasant but still a pretty effective round. Bench rest with 6" revolver, several rounds touch at 15 yards (my eyeglasses limit my accuracy at 25 yards unless I use the longer sight radius of the Buntline type shooter). I have not yet tried the longer pistol from a bench rest, but expect the same accuracy.

11.5gr Unique, CCI 300 primers, Sierra 180 JHP. They'll group under an inch at 50 yards with my Redhawk and are easy on the wrist.

That looks like a superb low pressure load. It shows up as way below the max pressures. I have some 180 gr. XTP's (Hornady) that I am going to try out, to see if the accuracy is good. Maybe this will be my next plinking and varmint load (where allowed).
Using QuickLoad (which has proven amazingly accurate for me, when one takes care to enter precise COAL, bullet length, barrel length and so on), I come up with these figures for similar handguns (the ones that I use):
QuickLoad predictions for your Sierra 180 gr JHP -
Taurus 6.5 In Stainless: 1359 fps / Ruger Super Blackhawk 10.5 In: 1511 fps
QL predicts for my Hornady 180 gr. XTP #44050 -
Taurus 6.5 In: 1368 fps / Ruger 10.5 In: 1518
As I recall, the XTP is designed to expand between 700 and 1500 fps - so this might be an optimum light (180 gr.) round for a silhouette shooter; and it might prove to be the ultimate campsite defense (two legged predators) round for this type of handgun. I'm gonna make this my next .44 load and see how it shoots. Thanx, GTS Dean.

the only 44 cal bullet that ever let me down was a 180 gr unnamed mfg hp at 1900 fps out of my sbh.i no longer shoot that fast light s#&t at deer.a heavy hard cast gets the job now.no,i didnt bag that sucker,cause he left the county.the xtp will be a better bullet.but i still wont use them.a hard cast is all you need in a 44.punch big,drive deep.

I've take a dozen white tails using a 200gr Hornady HTP bullet at ranges out to 45 yards. I load them on top of 23.4gr of 2400 and CCI 350s. This mule deer is the only one that took more than one shot (2) at 55 yards. Probably a 240gr would have done the trick.

9.0 Grains Unique Powder.
I tried this load last night at the range in my 7.5" SuperBlackHawk. very nice load.
Started at 7.0Gr., then 8.0Gr., then9.0Gr.
9.0Gr. seemed to burn a little cleaner then the other 2 loads. It has a very easy to control "Magnum type Recoil". Very accurate and fun to shoot.
I like those LaserCast, just bought another box for my .357
I'm going to load up some more, Jeff

Nice mule deer Dean
I`ve never taken a deer with a pistol.
I have a 7 and half inch barreled 45 LC Ruger Blackhawk.I am hoping this year to take my first trophy whitetail with that pistol..
Great pic bud

My general plinking and target load is 8.0 Unique under my cast 240g SWC.
I have the same problems as Box13 with Unique Powder. I keep running out.

You do, just apply on line with the state of colorado for a mule deer tag or an elk tag in some zones you can buy over the counter.Last season with the elevated gas prices many out of state hunters decided not to hunt in co so many premium elk & deer tags went unsold via the draw & were sold first come first served over the counter.Friends of ours applied on line for mule deer & elk tags near Meeker,CO and received them they came home with 3 3x3 mulie bucks & a cow elk.
