Have recently purchased the Judge and looking for a good safe load. I reload with Unique in .44 mag and would like to continue using this powder in the .45 Colt. Has anyone had experience with this pistol with reloads?
I've heard pros and cons about this pistol and purchased mainly for inside home protection

Windcreek, I don't have a Judge but I think any starting load with Unique should be safe. Some reloading manuals show 2 or 3 categories for .45 colt loads. Those safe for vintage Colt SAA, those safe for most modern guns, and those safe for use in TC Contender, Ruger Blackhawks and Redhawks, and .454 chambered guns. I would think that any load in category 2, modern guns, should work just fine in your Judge. As usual start low and work up. For inside home protection I might just stick with the .410 loaded with 3 pellets of 000 buckshot. American Derringer is one source for these loads. RD

Thanks for the reply. I've just about decided to only use .410 with 000 buck. However, the No 4 shot patterns good. I definantly didn't purchase pistol for target.
Thanks again.

If you are thinking home defense, and want to put forth a little more time, money and energy. you could get some brass shot shells #4 buck and #4 shot buffer and such. Then load your own. 6 of the number 4 buck pellets will fit in a 2and 1/2 brass shell with the other shot and buffer and it works as a great little round for specific purposes. I use mine off the motorcyle to kill coyotes. It is good to abou 25 feet. I will tell you more if youare interesred. Just a thought Pat

I recently purchased a Taurus Judge, the mag model with 3" chamber. Very nice gun! My 1st revolver and I am hooked. Anyway, I decided to go with a load I read in the latest Speer manual with the 10.5g of HS6 and a 250 g LFN. Well the gun did not like the load. The kick was big and one of the shells stuck in the chamber. So I went on to try different loads and the 2 nicest loads I have found to date is first with 8.0g of Unique with the 250g LFN and the second was the same 250g LFN and 8.0 g of Winchester 231. The Unique load was smoother on the gun tho. Someone else told me of a 230g Lead bullet and 8.0g of Unique. I have still to try but I am pretty sure I want to stick with the heavier bullet. I plan and trying Red Dot in the near future.
But I would welcome experiences and the different loads for the Judge and experiences with the different size bullets.

I've shot 8 grains of Unique on up to as much as 10 grains under a 250 grain flat nose lead bullet out of any number of .45 Colt revolvers. The magic number for me seems to be 9.0 grains - works pretty good in all of my .45's, from Ruger Vaquero to 1873 Model P Artillery clone.
8 grains of 231 might be a bit top-heavy, but if it works, then by all means use it.
I think you're in the zone there with 8 grains of Unique. If that load works for you, then God Bless!
