Tried a couple of rounds of against 2-liter water bottles mixed in with a water-filled 1/2 gallon orange juice carton, a 32-oz. milk jug, and a water-filled plastic fabric softener bottle.
Each round penetrated two 2-liter bottles, stopping in the second one. That equates to about 12 inches of water penetration (and three layers of plastic). The fabric softener bottle was at the back of the lineup both times and was dented but not punctured, so I dispatched it later with a round from my 1860 Army BP pistol.
The recipe was: Winchester 230 grain JHP - Notched (Part No.: WB45JHP230) over 7.4 grains of Power Pistol. Brass was store-bought Remington (RP) nickel-plated. Firearm was as pictured, Springfield Armory Model 1911 A-1. Distance to the target was 10 feet.
I expected more penetration than this load gave, but the expansion was excellent, appearing to be violent and nearly instantaneous, judging by the entry hole on the second bottles. The bullet on the left separated from its jacket, while the bullet on the right stayed together. Neither bullet had any debris stuck in the center of the mushroom.
