I have .38 special RCBS dies and have reloaded that round.  I've never reloaded .357Mag.  A friend recently purchased a .357 and asked if I could reload .357 mags for him using my .38 spl dies.

I said, "I dunno, I've never had to, never thought about it."

Is that do-able, or do I (he) need to get .357M dies?

Thanx.

I take it then that if .357 dies will reload .38 specials, then .38 special dies will reload .357 mag.

Any idea why then companies have separate .357 and .38 dies to purchase?

Oh yeah, I forgot, they want to make money

Would you need to adjust die differently 38sp vs 357mag, as 357 case is .10 longer?  I load 44sp and 44mag on same dies and I adjust bullet seating/crimp die different for each, I would think 38/357 would have same issue.

i reload both calibers with the same dies and yes the crimp must change in doing .357 mag rounds..... just the same as you do the .44 spl-.44 mag reloads..............

You cannot full length size a 357 case with 38spl dies. I think someone may have misinterpreted your post. 357 dies generally come with a spacer so you can also size 38sp cases without changing the setting. It doesn't work in reverse. The same goes for 44mag and 44spl.

yep.. right you are... back when i bought my lee speed dies i got another die body... one is .38 spl and one is .357 mag.......   you can use .357 dies to completely do .38 spl but not the reverse......   with two die bodies an extra parts i got i use both my single stage presses at once..... quite a system.............................

I use the spacer in reloading 38/357.  Very convenient.

Does anybodymadk a similar spacer fro .44 Mag/.44 Sp.?

I have a set of RCBS dies from the 80s that wil load 38 Spl, 357 Mag and 357 MAX, which I do all three.

So just load away, for the Mag and the MAX, I suggest strong roll crimps, which my dies set can do, but I also have other dies to taper crimps and "factory" crimp for all three.

2571,  Yep the Acc.pack for .44 cal is a RCBS part#09692. Just a few dollars and worth it.  You dont need it except if'n you want to keep your dies set. I've got one and dont use it cause I'm always switchin off on bullet types. I re-set my dies eavery time i use em.

redding used to ( i thought a couple other companies did as well tho can recall who )
kit was 3 spacers
.062 for no crimp / partial resizing
.125(exactly 1/8 inch ) for 44 mag/spec
.135 for 38 / 357
many years years ago 38 spec dies sold alot and less 357 dies now i'm sure according to rcbs yearly die sales it is the other way around, many dies can be used to load other rounds of the same caliber 357 max can be loaded with 357 mag dies 10mm can be reloaded with 40 s&w ,if one has a modern 45 colt (.451-452 barrel as opposed to 454 ) 45 acp will work in a pinch ,reloaders are often ingenious people ( love the 12 gauge from hell lolz )

I have loaded many hundred .357 Magnum using my Lee .38 Special three-die set.  Not a problem.  Shoots fine.

I am planning to soon get a separate .357 Magnum die set, only because I am setting up complete turrets for each caliber I load.  Then, no need to keep readjusting the .38 dies.

The 38 spl dies I just ordered from Lee specifically state that they will work with 357.
From my understanding, though, the reverse isnt necessarily true because the 357 dies may not adjust down far enough to work properly reloading 38s.

I agree with SP101. I have trouble using my RCBS .357 dies (older set) for 38 Spl as they won't run far enough up into the die to crimp. In fact I can barely  get them in the cylinder as they wont go far far enough in to totally eliminate the flare. Looks like this is one of those case by case deals. (pun intended) RD

Got my Lee 38 special carbide dies in today and they definitely work great for both 38 and 357s :)

I just loaded another hundred .357Mags with my .38Spcl Lee dies.  I do have a spare seater die (marked for the .357 by black marker), so use it for the .357 to minimise changes for seating.

There used to be a set of Lee dies that was for the 357mag. While they would work for the 357Max they couldn't be set to do 38spl.

Don't ask me how I know! Now I have several sets of 38spl dies that I can do either on.

Where it showed up was on the bullet seating/crimping die. You couldn't set it low enough to do the crimping part.

A word to the wise as we look at used equipment. Make sure it says "38spl" on it and you are good to go.

FWIW

MidwayUSA is currently sold out of the Lee .357Magnum dies.  They have some other brand of flaring dies, but the selection is thin and expensive!
