I gotta new .44 redhawk mainly for defence when I'm huntin'.I'd also be usin' it for hunting, but I'm not sure what to use, lead kieth style bullets or normal jacketed ones. I like the jacketed for a bit more expansion, but the lead seems good also.

What do you think?

I'm a big fan of .44s and have several, both Magnums and Specials. When the chips are down I don't think anything can beat a cast 240/250 grain Keith-style SWC. I have nothing against jacketed bullets, I just much prefer the cast lead and think that in general they perform better.

i use a 320 cast performance lbt solid in my .44mag.  h110 powder. various cast bullets are in all of my revolver rounds.  as said above, nothing really against jacketed bullets.

this is more my thinkin, normal lead kieth style bullets or jacketed ones. I like the keith style for a bit more for penetration, but the jacketed seems good also.  defence when you are huntin means something that will bite or stomp.I think the cast will fill that better.

I've used H110 for hot loads, but really prefer Unique for just about everything in .44s.

Over the years I've become a bigger fan of cast. Partly because I'm cheap, partly because I like the bullet design of a swc better. Rest assurd you can get a decent lead mix that will perform well for most applications also.

Years ago I used to hog hunt pretty regularly. A good sidearm makes a lot of sense when you're hunting one of those porkers. I've seen a couple times when one would either sneak up on us or vice versus someone get spooked and drop thier rifle. Having that security strapped on you side helps gettting down out of that tree you climbed a lot more enjoyable......

Just the idle ramblings of an old fart.....

Hey, I've been working up a .44 mag redhawk load for the same reason. I've been basing my load from info provided by klallen. I'm using beartooth 325grn, LCMN with H110. I'm up to 21.o grns.  You can shure fell the power with these hot loads. Gotta love it.

7.5 inch. So far the biggest boost to speed has been adjusting my crimp believe it or not.  I'm also fixin to start working an Accurate load as well. but the 110 load will be primary protection load. ie bears and such.

7.5 is the same as mine, do you heavy crimp it or lighter?

Well, since I been loading for pistol, "about 2 years". (before that, just bought pistol bullets.)ive had so many 240grn jhp, Ive only been crimping just enough to seat in the cannelure and keep that darn bullet from sliding out.  But with this hot load and heavy bullet, Ive found that a heavier crimp has let more pressure get the speed up. After numerous changes, I started crimping a little more and a little more, and watched the increase, as well as acuracy to an extent. With plinking the 240's it did not really mater much.A family member gave me 10 boxes of those 240's                     I've spent much of my25years or so of handloading just improving my rifle ammo, pistol has just always been cheap enough. Now I load about everything.   Good .44mags are over a dollar a piece now.Pistol is definatly a little different, and Im still learning more about it,  Allways will be I guess.

True, I geuss if I really thought about it I would have picked the heavier crimp. I'm just starting to load my own and I'll try doing the heavier crimp.

One more question does the bullet lead the barrel pretty bad since it's lead?

My favorite 44 mag  hunting load is the 250 Keith and 20 gr of 2400 with Standard 300 primers. You will get some minor leading when using full powered loads but it will clean up easy  with normal cleaning. Leading depends on the bullet maker and not having them cast to hard or to soft. My go to all around load is the same bullet with 9.5 grs of Unique and 300 standard primers.
