I shoot most of my 44 Mags out of my T/C Contender Super 14, but I also have a redhawk, I like both, but I think the Contenders gives me better accuracy at 100 plus yards.
I shoot cast bullets from 180 grains up to 300 grains. for Mild loads I use WW 231, stiffer loads I use 2400. For a really strong load I do use H-110 or IMR-4227. For loads that I want to expand I use CB that cast from WW, for the deep penetration low expansion I use Lino. These loads are all with Magnum Primers.
I only use the 240 grain HP jacketed and the 240 SIL Jacketed, these can be oushed to 1,100fps in a Ruger, but it's a stiff load. In the Contender, they are as strong on the recoil, but the pistol takes some of the recoil, where the Ruger it doesn't. For these I use IMR-4227 and magnum primers.
Enjoy your new toy, 44s can be a log of fun. Instead of using 2 litre pop bottle with water in them, fill the 2 litre bottle up at 2/3 of the way with water, leave the cap a little open, then put them in the freeze over night. If you close the cap tightly while it is freezing, it may expand out and rumpture the bottle. Hit one from 100 yards it has a really good show, hit one at 25 yards you may feel the ice.
Again Have Fun,
Jerry

Double T, I do get some leading, but not bad however I have only been loading 10 rnds with each load till I find my wanted results. Like I've said, Using these solids is new to me. My shoot all day load is 10grn uniqe with those 240 jhps. As far as lead build-up, I tend to clean thoroughly after every day of shooting, and it wasnt much lead at all. You ought to see what that lead will do to a pine tree.

Yeah these .44s are fun, the first day I shot it I shot it at a foot and a half of magazines at 50 yds. 30-30 doesn't even do that.

For defense out in the woods (or desert, or open country - whatever), where over-penetration into your neighbor's house really isn't an issue, the Keith Bullet/Load should stand you in good stead against man or beast. In town, I'd pick one of the commercially-loaded hollow point self-defense rounds in .44 Special. The choices there are many and most are engineered to avoid over-penetration. I sometimes carry a .44 Special loaded with CCI Blazer ammo, the 200 grain Gold Dot Hollow Point. It's really knocks the stuffings out of melons and water jugs - pretty impressive energy transfer.
I used to get an average MV of 1406 fps with a SD of 12 out of my 5.5" Redhawk, using a 240 grain cast (WW) gas-checked Keith-style SWC over 16.2 grains of Blue Dot. That was a heavy load, not all that fun to shoot, but quite accurate and likely would have put most any dangerous critter in the lower 48 (on 2 or 4 legs) down for the count in short order.
The same bullet over 12.4 grains of Unique gave an average velocity of 1282 fps and SD of 12 out of the same gun. I seem to recall that this load was more pleasant to shoot than the other one, and was plenty accurate.
My Redhawk gave me 1275 fps on average and a SD of 17 with Speer 240 grain semi-jacketed hollow points over 15.5 grains of HS6.
All these loads were ignited by CCI 350 (Large Pistol Magnum) primers.
If you have - or can borrow - a chronograph, it's alot of fun and quite educational to build a variety of loads with a bullet design that you like and see what kind of velocities and accuracy combinations you can come up with.
