I've had a 7-30 Waters Contender for 30 years. I've shot hundreds of 120 Gr. Hornady Single Shot Pistol bullets in it. I can't find any anywhere and they are not listed on the Hornady website. I don't know what to substitute either. All of the flat point 7mm designed for this cartridge are heavier than 120. The advantage of the ssp was supposed to be a thinner jacket that opened at handgun speed. I'm wondering if 120 Gr. Nosler Ballistic tips might work? I also see that data in the Hodgdon manual no longer lists ssp's either and that the data for 120gr bullets has backed off about a grain and a half for H322. I have shot a book rec. 30.6 grains now they are saying 29 Gr. Max. Anybody else out there using this caliber or 7-08 in an Encore? What bullet?  RD

I used the 7mm TCU with the ballistic tip Nosler 120's for several years with good results, ie. expansion and penetration.   Hope that helps.

Ballistic tips do not work for my 7mm BR XP nor HP's from Sierra. Hornady has some bullets that look promising-A max & V max. I have boxes of 7mm bullets that I have tried and just didn't mushroom. Some I dug out of the ground looked like you could use them again. I keep searching. DAve

seirra has a single shot pistol bullet( well 3 -6 mm-7mm-308) i have used the 7 and the 30 in my contenders ,havent shot any edible game with them tho .....the 7-08 is a lil faster and can use thicker jacketed bullets to better advantage tho i'm just now workin up loads for mine ,the nosler bt's( 120) do well from my 7-30 tho ( not as explosive on deer as from a larger hulled 7 mm)i wont use bt's on deer etc from a rifle ,p-dogs sure no problems ,IMO the 120 7mm's are more for varmits but at the lower velocities of a pistol they should perform more like a heavier bullet
i have a couple of loads that were below max in books when i first started out shoot too well to give up now with no sign of high pressure yet the newer books list them as being too hot ....i understand that perhaps they do this to save themself's from lawsuits from idiotic people who merely buy the componets get the book and start at max loads ( or more ) and then try to sue when things go bad ,i always urge folks to work up their loads, good case in point ? i have a 300 mag starting loads were way too hot in this rifle ( go figure that one out lolz ) yet dropping below starting loads isnt reccomended by the books and never with the slower powders, i consider every barrel just like a woman and we have to woo every one as they are all differnt
on a side note i just got a replacement barrel in 7-30 until i can get the 6x48 retapped to 8x48's on my original one ( i let my neph shoot up some fireforming loads and somehow he didnt notice the scope mounts comming loose-in fairness the mount was already messed up when i got it and the guy who swindled me on it had epoxied the mount and the stripped screws in the mount -being as it came with the scope and everything was tite i didnt notice it myself ,put appox 400 rounds thru it before it showed up even )btw i used alot of 175 grain rem's for fire forming and 140's for plinking ( got a decent deal way back when )

I shoot the  7TCU and load it with a "soup can type" 7mm cast bullet. It works for me and I can adjust the alloy is needed.

My choices locally were pretty narrow. I ended up with a 139 Grain Hornady FP intended for lever guns. Local gunsmith said they were lighter jackets than bullets intended for .280 or 7mm Mag. Loaded some today and made a trip to the range. Best 50 yd 3 shot group using the FP was right at 2" using 27 Grains of H322. My previous best 3 shot at 50 yards was less than 3/8" using 30.6 Grains under the 120 Grain Hornady SSP. Pretty disappointing for a gun that was capable of breaking clay targets hanging on the backstop with some regularity at 200 yds. But I haven't played around with seating depth etc. yet. Maybe I'll get there. RD
