I'm only about 3 mo. into reloading and I have a question. I just came across 5K. std. sm. rifle primers, CCI1400. I load 9mm 115gr. FMJ, 4.3gr. Win 231 & .40 S&W 165 Jacketed 4.5gr. Win 231. Can I use the small rifle primers with these loads and if not what changes should I make? Thanks

rifle primers ( small rifle primers) are used for some very hi pressure pistol rounds ( 357 maximum for one ) while the small rifle primers fit there's several other variables in there ,#1 being will ur firing pin fire them ? rifle primers usually have a much stronger cup than pistol primers,it's possible that a soft falling firing pin wont fire them try reading this thread and see if that helps ?

it's the large rifle vs. large pistol that have the biggest diff in height but ...all rifle primers are thicker material

I say no.  They are made for two different applications.  While the sizes are very similar, I agree with Fryboy's comment.
Small rifle primer (CCI BR-4 Bench Rest) measure 0.0172"D X 0.0119"H
Small pistol primer (Federal SM Match GM200M) measure 0.0173D X 0.0117H
What makes the difference is the primer material and design criteria.

Those small rifle primers would be good like for .223 or similar calibers calling for SR primers.
