Since the Cartridge of the Month is currently the 45ACP I thought I'd ask what you folks like to load for yours. Any recipies you might be willing to share.
I have some Winchester brand 230 FMJ and JHP bullets to load. I think these are the same bullets I've been shooting in the Winchester factory ammo. There's about 124 prepped and primed cases waiting for powder, a bullet and a crimp. Since I have a lot of W231 and 700X I'll probably go with those first. I also have Unique and AA7. And I just saw a can of Hodgdon Clays powder when I looked. Hmmm, I used to have Bullseye but I guess I haven't bought any in a long, long time.
What are some of your loads?

I have been doing pretty good with 230 gr FMJ ball using 4.6 gr of W231. Since I have about 16 lbs of the 231 and a few thousand of the 230 gr ball, I needed to work up a target load. I loaded up 1600 rds this spring of them. As soon as the ball FMJ are gone, I have about 10,000 185 gr SWC FMJ that I will start on. I have not used any of the new Unique that they brought out a few years ago claiming it was a lot cleaner, but I have found that the Universal Clays was a tad bit cleaner burning than the W231. I have laoded a lot of both in light .357 loads, and the two are so close as to buring rate that I switch off with either using the same load of 4.4 gr behind a 158 gr RNFP. These are target loads. I would be a might more careful if I was playing around on the upper end.
If I was buying powder, I would buy the Universal Clays. After I finish the W231, I have 8 lbs each of Accurate No. 2, Accurate No. 2 Improved, and Accurate No.5. All are suppose to work good in the 45, with the No. 5 being supposedly developed just for the 45.
The old Unique load of 5 gr with a 230 gr bullet works well also.

My favorite load is as follows.
Starline/PMP cases. CCI 300 primer, hornady XTP-HP 200 grain bullets, Unique, 7.0 grains. (Was a book load, but as the years passed, the books all pussed out, and it is now over max, no idea why.)
Makes any .45 shoot like a full custom target gun.
Funny story: I was at a range, and they had a sign there, Star PD for sale, $200 to good home. I called the number, and we made an appointment to shoot it at the range the very next day. He kinda didn't want me shooting it, but after I told him I wanted to buy it, I had the cash, and flat wouldn't buy it without shooting at least 20 rounds through it.
I just brought ammo and enough money to buy it, didn't bring any guns with me.
He was at the 7 yard line, waiting for me to shoot it.
We talked for a few, then I asked if I could shoot it.
As soon as I picked it up, I cleared it, carried it to the 25 yard range (To his dismay.) loaded 6 rounds in the mag, and shot a 6 shot group, about 1", maybe 1 1/4"". Shot about 2 or 3 inches high, dead center.
I started reaching for my wallet. He balked. He didn't want to sell it.
Turns out he couldn't hit with that gun, and assumed the gun was just a bad gun. I did end up with the gun, but he sure didn't want to part with it very badly.
Ever since then, when I shoot a gun to evaluate it, I "draw" a picture on the target with holes, and not try for cloverleafs.

To this day, that little Star still outshoots most of my autos under $700, and has won me many a game of PIG.
Most of the bluing is gone, the frame is kind of a goofy faded purple color (That happens when anodizing starts to go bad.).
That gun has never THOUGHT about malfunctioning in the years since I bought it. No, it's not for sale.
Not bad for a ratty looking spanish made alloy framed commander sized 1911 wannabe with the wrong screw in the rear sight. (To lower the POI to dead center.)
It sits in the back of the safe these days, I'm absolutely petrified about breaking it now that parts are no longer available for it, but every now and then I send 6 rounds downrange for old times sake.

I'm a dinosaur, most of my handgun loads, including .45 ACP, use Flammable Dirt, also known as Unique. Depending on my usage, I'll go with 6.5 to 7 grains, inder a cast 200 gr SWC. With 230 grain bullets, cast or jacketed, I'll go 6 to 6.5 grains. Standard primers, used to use CCI exclusivly, but now use a lot more Winchester.

My favorite load is the Hornady 230 XTP +P . They work well for hunting and self defense.

Hello - just found you guys tonight, er this morning -1:30am.
Ben kinda browsin and I think I like 'most' of what I see.
I know I found this post late in the game; but I've ben looking everywhere for some 'Good' DATA for .45 Super -w/ no luck.
I don't own a crony yet, so I can only watch for sign's of pressure and work my way up from the top of the .45ACP data I find laying around; some of that is rifle data.
So I loaded some 240 JHC (from my .454 Casull) w/ 10.1gr of blue dot for est. 975fps.
I thought these would be the BIG load our upcomming trip to the field, until I realized I had loaded some 185 JHP with 8gr of W231 - - I don't think I am over the limit for the Super but ??? since there are no recipies for it and I can not look for any signs of pressure until I actually touch one off...
what do you think - around 1100-1200fps ?
BTW: I am throwing the lead through a 6" V16

My most accurate .45 ACP load is the classic 5 grains of Bullseye under a 200gr LSWC. Shoots very well in every Gov't model I've tried it in.

The JHP is the same bullet that Winchester first used in the "Subsonic" ammo and then in the Personal Defense "white box" stuff that is sold at Wal-Mart.
I have used this bullet on game (deer and wild boar) at velocities from 1040 fps to 1350 fps (in a .45 Win-mag). While it starts to come unglued at 1200 fps, it is fantastic at 1000 fps!
I am not home right now so I won't list my charge (for fear of being wrong and because lot to lot variations are significant) but I use SR4756 to get 1040 fps in the regular .45 ACP. It is extremely accurate and consistent with no pressure signs, though it surely is in the +P range.
I use 6.2 grs of 231 to push 230 FMJ to right at 900 fps. Also quite accurate.

When you can find them and afford them, The best I have ever used or tested and Winchester Black Talons. They are excellent in 9mm, 40, 10mm, 357, 44mag, and 45acp. They offer uniform expansion and 100 percent weight retention. As far as reloading I use Titegroup in all my loads.

I just thought I'd mention it because we're on the subject of .45 ACP ammo. I've been buying CCI Blazer Brass ammo from Wal-Mart for $9.97 @ box for the last few weeks. The store near me has 12 more boxes on order. This is an excellent price for 230 Gr. FMJ Ball Ammo in .45 ACP. I can't assemble it from purchased components that cheap. The brass is fully reloadable, boxer primed brass from CCI. To give you an example Cabela's by me has Wolf steel cased, non reloadable .45 ACP for $11.99 @ box. The same Wal-Mart has CCI Mini-Mag .22's for $4.97 per 100. Go figure. Bill T.

Does anyone have experience with Rainer plated bullets? I ordered 1000 200Grain semi wadcutters. They shipped 200Grain FLAT POINTS!
I am thinking about using 4.5 grains of Red Dot. Anyone have any suggestions.

I have used Rainers 230 round nose, with 4.6 gr Hodgdon's Tight Group , nice mild load around 750 fps, (.45 ACP)
Have also used them in .40 S&W, I65 gr
I have some 180 flat piont for the .40 but have to load any. I have yet to have any problems with Rainers

i like to load lee tumble lube 200 grain swc's over 4.5 grains of bullseye for my everday plinking load.
other than some 45 super loads now and then it eats the plinkers 99% of the time and they are good enough to hit a paper plate at 100 yards if i can do my part.

I just loaded two boxes of some Berry's 185 gr. with 4.6 to 5.gr of TiteGroup behind them. Haven't gone to the range yet. This is a faster powder, than say Unique. Hope it is not to snappy, for I have a SA Champ.
