a dipper.....actually it depends ,the electric ones such as the rcbs or the lyman are designed to throw a pre-programed weight ...hard to mess with that ,one thing to keep in mind that ball powders often measure more consistently than large grained stick powders,or manually operated measures alot will depend upon the user and doing it exactly the same every time the rest will be pure opinion (ummm so was the above lolz )
edit for add..
btw ? welcome to the board ! drop by and introduce urself and say hello to everybody

That's kinda like asking how high is up. Measures and dispemsers are available for most everything, from benchrest to plinking. How much do you want to spend? What are you planning on using it for?

Welcome to the forum,
Could you give us some background on what you like to shoot?
Back to the thread
I agree with Charlie, it depends on what you are going to use the ammo for. As far electronic ones, I have a PACT that I really like:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=574898
But I also have the orginal Dillon powder dispenser, before the dispenser became a part of the hand automated version of the 550B press.
Then I have a Forster dispenser some where around, and of course what every bench should have is a set of Lee Dippers.
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=943305
All of these can be really good and exacting, it depends on technique and the user.
The question is also what type of scales do you have?

OK, since you are not going to be shooting benchrest, or varments at 500 yards, most measures will fit your needs for handgunning. I'd look at athe Lees or the RCBS Uniflow, those should fit your needs without costing mucho denaro.

at least the choice got narrowed down a wee bit ,no large charges and no long kernel powders....
still hard to beat that electric auto dispenser ( except in price) they make a few pistol only bushing charge types that work fine ,next question single stage ,stand alone or progressive press ?( see i get to ask questions too lolz sometimes even hard ones )fixed cavity or adjustable ?
hands down cheapest ...lee dippers
manual labor ,slow but never ever get out of adjustment ( ever ! )
umm the list only goes up from there btw

I would go with the RCBS Uniflow, it is solid and well built. What are you using for scales?

Okay, for pistol loading there is little (NO?) benifit to weighing each charge to .1 gr. so a digital dumpster would be vast overkill.
Larger measures are generally made for large charges of rifle powders, again not really suited to handguns. The makers do, or most do, have smaller acessory option pistol chambers available but that tends to run up an already high cost tool.
If I were starting over and mostly planned to load for hand guns I'd probably get a Lee double-disc measure. It's ajustable, after a fashion, and very consistant with small charges.
OR, if I expected to load a lot of handgun AND a good bit of rifle stuff later, I'd likely get a Lee "Perfect" measure. It's fully adjustable, works as well as any other with ball and flake powders IF it's kept CLEAN AND PROPERLY ADJUSTED! As a matter of fact, mine seems to do even better than my reliable old Redding Md. 3 (which is copied by Hornady) when dispensing tubular powders so ... what's the real value of my very well made cast iron measure?
Mechanically, I agree the RCBS Uniflow is as good as my Redding (or its Hornady clone) powder measure IF we ALSO buy their extra cost "micrometer" chamber plug. But, why should we have to pay (a lot) for a tool AND then buy the other chamber when the maker already KNOWS it really needs that device, which ALL others include on the original unit? On that point alone, the Uniflow is NOT FOR ME!Last edited on Wed Oct 21st, 2009 03:43 PM by Busted

Have to admit, the Lee Perfect measure is more consistent than the Uniflow it replaced. Just trying to give a choice...

For 9mm and 45 ACP pistol, I don't weight each charge, I just like to get set up and measure maybe the first three throws of the dispenser and then something every 10th or 20th throw just to see that I am keeping my charges uniform.

Yeah, I saw that; your advice was/is on the mark. I just wanted to give Hank a bit more elaboration on the logic behind it and some other options as well!
I batch process my ammo. I only weigh the first few throws needed to adjust my measure, whichever one, and do a final check of the powder columes in the loading blocks before setting in bullets. Under a proper light it's VERY easy to spot a double or missed charge and pretty easy to spot a charge that's off more than .3 gr., or even less with some powders.
In some four plus decades and tens of thousands of round, I've never had a missed charge, double charge or even a blooper. (Knock on my wooden head!)
Seems us old guys are killing a cold morning the same way!

I have a Lee double disk and use it with good success. I have it on my turret press. I use it for loading hand gun and my Mini-14 plinking stuff....Plenty accurate enough for that .
That's my opinion....we welcome yours.....lol
Have a good one, Guy

Busted,
I must be in to the million rounds loaded category and never a double charge or a misfire, I have created on purpose some proof rounds that were way too hot for the weapon nornammly.
Somedays I feel like Mc Donalds, millions and millions loaded.

Ditto for me too. Plinking and practice doesnt' need nth degree accuracy.

For the 9mm and 45 ACP I like the Dillon powder throw as attached to the 550B or 650.
For the stand alone throw I prefer the Redding, but if you want an RCBS uniflow (I have one of those also) make sure you get the optional marked adjustment rod, like the Redding comes with.
Best,
Ed

I have the powder dispensers on my Dillons and I have the ones from the days before Dillon automated them. So they are very useful even when they are 20 years old.

Yep,
A good powder throw is like a good cook book, they never go out of style or wear out.
Best,
