What is the minimum pistol you would carry for your CCW or your backup. At first I carried a S&W M39, it was a great pistol. Then I carried a Walther PPK/s, there have been a few pistols between all of them, but these days, I would carry anything lighter than a 38 Spl +P. If I could I would carry my Sig P220 in 45 ACP, but I have to wear a heavy coat to carry the Sig.
So lets hear what you carry and why.

First carry gun for me was a Smith 45-16. Great handgun, but by the end of the day I felt like I was listing on my strongside, it always felt heavy. Moved to a Kel-Tec P-11 in 9x19, still carry it sometimes, when I need something very flat. Primary carry gun is a Para P-12. Aluminum frame makes it an easy carry, and .45 ACP is a comfort.
Mrs. Charley started with a Makarov, but could only carry in her purse, didn't like it on body. She switched to a Kel-Tec P-32 for pocket carry.
Have to admit, for special purposes, I've carried some unusual stuff. Whe traveling to Galveston to go on a cruise, Mrs. Charley and I both carried inexpensive ( not cheap) Brazilian revolvers in .32 S&W Long that were gunshow pickups. The reason for that is I didn't want to leave our primary carry guns in the truck for a week, even in a supposed locked, secure parking area. BTW, when carrying a .32 S&W Long, I broke my own rule about no handloads, and had some fairly warm cast FN bullets instead of the factory low velocity RN.

Under normal circumstances, the lightest handgun I carry for backup is a .380 auto, as long as I have at least a 9mm for a primary weapon. Before I finally broke down and bought a good IWB holster (Crossbreed in my case) I often carried a compact 9mm in summer and .45 Combat Commander the rest of the year. However, I now carry the Combat Commander year round with the IWB holster. An untucked shirt of any kind will provide the necessary concealment - even a loose t-shirt. Comfort is excellent and peace of mind is enhanced for me. I am a firm believer in calibers that start with a 4 and end with a 5 if there is anyway to have one with me - and clothing requirments are about the only thing that changes that.
Mrs. Quiet Man carries her Colt Government Model .380 or her Ruger LCP due to weight considerations on a daily basis, although her Beretta Centurian 9mm or .45 Combat Commander sometimes (uncomfortably) becomes her companion when farther from home.
The proper ammunition certainly makes the choice less of an issue than it was 30 years ago. If unusual circumstances required it, I would carry a .22 and still feel better than if just toting a sharp stick.
Like Jerry, I am blessed to live in the country and frequently carry a Ruger Super Blackhawk around my property or even "out and about" in our rural area. Again, an untucked shirt provides enough cover in most circumstances out here because nobody really gives a hoot and most people are carrying something anyway. It only becomes more important when we go into town.

i dont carry or would own anything under a 38 special. Sorry 9 MM fans lol 38s a good gun and its accurate. My fav is a toss up between a 38 and a 44 magnum

My decided minimum, would be .380acp, and I have been looking lately at a few pistols in that cal, no decisions made as to whose yet.
What I carry on the other hand, is either my 1911A1 clone, Llama model XIA, usually in a belt slide or IWB holster (I do have a paddle for it also), or my EAA Witness Compact Polymer (double-stack, the short mag holds 8, the full length/size Witnwess magazines it will fit, hold 10), usually in a belt slide, or a Blackhawk vertical shoulder holster.
Getting to be winter, this setup gets carried more, as yes, even I need a moderate coat/jacket to cover the shoulder rig, it's not thin by any means.
I have a Star 9mm that I would carry, have to locate, or have made, apropriate leather for it first. All I have at the moment, is the same Uncle Mike's Belt Slide that I usually adjust to fit the Witness (but will actually carry anything, including revolvers).

The smallest I carry is 9mm. My main carry is usually either a 40 or a 45acp depending on which firearm I am in the mood to carry  ......Oh OK I lied the smallest I would carry is a 38spl +p ....sometimes I do tote around my little snub nose....rarely but it does happen

I carry the same 1911A1 in 45 that I have had for 30 years.Built on an essex frame.Got a little Sterling 380 for a backup.

My conceal permit will be back from the Sheriff's office soon, so I've been thinking about this a lot. I have a 3" 1911 and 38spl+P snub nose to choose from, I'll have to experiment carrying each.

One of these days, I'm going to break down and get my mitts on a 380, which seems about the smallest for carry worth the effort. In the meantime, it's a 1911 in a drop leg when on foot out of town, there's a bear in the area. Now and then, weather permitting (meaning cold enough for a coat) the 357 goes in a shoulder rig for "social" purposes. Can be either one in the pickup.
Given the size of both of those, hiding them on my scrawny frame is impossible in warm weather, leaving me little options on grocery and bank runs. The state is open carry, but why bait the idiots?

If your Star 9mm is the Firestar, any commercial leather designed for the Colt Officers model or similarily proportioned compact 1911's will work just fine. I carry my Firestar in an El Paso Saddlery #88 Street Combat holster sized for the Officers and it works perfectly.

The little missus carries a Taurus snub-nosed .357. She loves that little revolver.
I'm a bit round, so I can hide a 1911 easily.

Have carried a 22 H&R target 22, 25, 32,380, 38, 357, and a 45. Now my carry is a Makarov which is a 9X18. Lost my wee 22mag. NA derringer back up while bush hogging. What ever you carry you should be able to "snap shoot" it and do accurate aimed shots as well. Shot placement will beat firepower any day, wc

I figure with a 38 +P at close range and a very short barrel, will have a rather loud report, as well as the fact I can put 1 to 2 rounds into a target's bullseye at any where from 5 to 20 feet
But being able to draw and fire at close range is something every one has to practice regularly. My S&W 340 PD is causing me to have callused hands from live fire practice, but it is comfortable to carry.
In the bush, I carry my Sig P220 in 45 ACP, a couple of G'Hogs where dispatched with the Sig, but when I fire it at a critter, the neighbors dog wets himself.

Do any of you change your load for the season, such as to penetrate thick winter clothing better? I read an article where the author used XTPs in the winter for penetration but GDs in the summer for more expansion.

I use Hydra Shok ammo in my 340 PD, at such close range, I don't worry about heavy clothing would be that much of a problem.
No matter the season, if I could get a regular supply Winchester Ranger ammo, I would use that.
If the front layer of winter clothing slows the bullet down, it may mean that the bullet may not come out the back side.

I carry pro-Load's 230 gr +P JHP in my .45 ACP, Mrs. Charley's .32 ACP runs best with WW Silvertips. Heavy clothing isn't an issue 'round here, not much really cold weather.
