Evening gentlemen  >>  I had a bit written up and then something went screwy with the computer and I lost it so, suffice it to say, the Taurus delivered today.  Some quick measurements     ...     the cylinder's 2.290".  .010" shorter then the cylinder of the X-Frame so I won't be tinkering with the 700 gr. bullets.  Just to long.  Barrel's listed at 10" but with the ports, there's 8 3/4" of usable barrel.  72 ozs. as it sits with no scope stuff or cartridges.  Base, signature z's and a Burris 1.5-4x20mm handgun scope are on order.  Reloading components are trickling in.  500 gr. LeadHeads should be the last thing to arrive.  Couldn't stand it so I picked up a box of CorBon factory stuff.  Sure don't mind charging a healthy price for that stuff.  Anyway, CorBon's never been known to download anything so I should get a pretty decent education on what a full-tilt load'll feel like.  They're listing 1625 fps with the 440 gr. Cast Performance LBT on the box so it should be lively, to say the least.  Here's some quick pics.  I'll post another when the scope's been mounted.  >>  klallen

Thanks, TG.  I was mildly concerned with the length of barrel and how it would balance but now that it's here, I really like it.  And if I can get the scope centered more over the hand rather then out on the barrel, it should even be better.

At this point, I'd be happy just to be able to get out and shoot the thing.  Caught a nasty bug and it's really knocked me down.  Can't remember going this long with something new in my hands without fireing it and it's driving me bonkers.  Honestly, I doubt I'd even have the grip strength right now to keep it from jumping clean out of my hand.  Hopefully I can get on the upswing of this soon maybe for some weekend shooting.  Take care.  >>  klallen

Kory,

Welcome to the .500 club!      These are my 2 Magnum Research BFR's. One in .500 S&W, the other in .45-70.  More fun than the law should allow. Both print good, especially the .45-70. Not cheap to shoot, but thats about the only disadvantage!  Bill T.

Ahh, the BFR maxine. I haven't seen one of those in a coons age.

First time I saw one of those I thought it was a joke.

a .45/70 in a revolver? You gotta be kiddin' me!
I wouldn't want to get pistol-whipped with that huge hunk of iron...

To be totally honest it's a really nice piece! More controleable than the ..500 Magnum. Remember, the .45-70 is a low pressure cartridge. Even when stuffed with 552 Grain Cast Bulets!  Bill T.

Howdy BILLT  >>  The .500 Club     ...     I like that.  I'm slowly working myself past this illness.  Hopefully later this week I can actually send a bullet down the barrel.  I never seriously considered this cartridge as a purchase possibility until Taurus came into the picture.  Makes owning one a little more affordable.  Relatively speaking, anyways.  Good to see the BFR's are working well for ya.  >>  klallen

fwiw... there's a feller over on 24 hour campfire that claims he has shot some 700's out of his 500 at 1230 f/s. he opines that performance level is beyond his ability.

the more i see about the 500 the more intrigued i am by them. caught myself in the gun shop looking over a couple of them yesterday... just a matter of time. i'd like to hold off for just a bit longer, though.

Evening DAKOTA  >>  I don't know who this guy on 24hr is getting his bullets from but I have been in contact with a maker in Alaska who's got a 700 gr. WFN.  His name is Richard and my primary question was the OAL of a .500 cartridge using that 700 gr. bullet.  2.310".  Wouldn't work with the 2.290" cylinder of my Taurus.  Come to think of it, I gotta get an e-mail sent off to him as he hadn't worked with any of the Taurus .500 revolvers and wanted the cylinder measurement.  I guess he supplies data with shipments of the bullets.  Would have been nice to tinker with that bullet (I think) but these 500 gr. WFN LeadHeads will do just fine.  They have been used in Africa with stellar success (according to the owner of the outfit).  Could probably be loaded up to 1450 - 1500 fps but I'm not going to.  1150 - 1200 fps is my target velocity.  We'll see how things feel there and progress accordingly.  Snag one for yourself and we'll compare data  ;o)  .  Just got the call today that my scope, base and rings arrived.  Can't wait to get this all put together.  Chat with ya later.

BILLT, been meaning to ask ya, how long is the jump of the bullet in your .500 BFR, when it's chambered in a revolver having a cylinder long enough to accept 45-70 cartridges?  Just curious.  >>  klallen

Just curious Klallen,  do you have holsters for carrying those scoped revolvers?  Maybe one of the across-the-chest models that's made for scoped guns?

I like the looks of the Raging Bull.....

the one i use for my 480 works a little like suspenders. the weight is supported across my back via crossed straps, and the gun and holster are retained to my belt on my right, and from the harness to my belt on my left. or, last year i tried it out as crossdraw, and that seems to work a little better for accessibility, but not as comfortable as strong-side.

i haven't tried a chest holster though - i have enough crap on my back already and i feel like i'm 4' thick on a side profile - if i were to wear the gun on my chest it would just feel worse... but, probably would work better for security of the gun and scratch prevention.

Hi GR  >>  No, I don't own one of those holsters.  Years back, I was invited to hunt some land butted up against Glacier National Park here in Montana.  Beautiful elk and mulie country.  Never saw a thing but they told me it was beautiful elk and mulie country   .  Anyway, was advised to have some kind of sidearm with me, as shots on game served as dinner bell for the local grizzlies.  Nice.  I borrowed a cheap, oversized holster to carry my scoped SRH .454 Casull.  Good Lord.  By the end of a day of trapsing up and down the mountains, you'd a thought I was carrying two rifles with me.  I don't know if this holster simply didn't fit correctly or it's cheap design wasn't ever ment to fit correctly but when I got home, I returned the thing and never looked at such contraptions again.  I settled on the thinking that if I were to ever take any of my heavy revolvers into the hill hunting, they would be "carried" as the primary weapon and not carried ina holster as secondary defense.

Maybe I owe it to myself to look into different options for scoped revolver holsters today.  There's gotta be better stuff available then that thing I had strapped to my body.  Anyone have any favorites in this area?  GR, you have a preference?  >>  klallen

I own a bunch of handguns including the FA 454 Casull but if i was going to carry a handgun in bear country it would be my 4 inch Smith 629 44 mag with 300 gr hard cast bullets behind a heavy dose off 2400, and hope for the best if i had to use it. In my opinion single action and heavy recoil of the 454 would be a bigger handicap than the double action 44 , because i believe a handgun is a poor choice against a pissed off bear at spitting range to start with . The 44 will surprise most people how well they pentrate with good 300 gr cast bullets . Just stay away from most HP no matter how much they weight because they have a serious pentration problem in heavy muscle and bone. Just hope you never have to use a handgun to stop a bear from chewing part of your butt off.

This one from Desantis looks really nice. It won't fit a scoped gun however.  More is slowly becoming avaliable for the .500 Bill T.

Klallen,  I don't have a scoped handgun so I've never had the need for a holster of that type.  That's why I was wondering what you planned to use...or in this case, not use.

I'm thinking of times when I've had to climb over some rocks and I slung my rifle over my shoulder to leave both hands free.   Carrying a pistol, even scoped, should be a lot easier than lugging the rifle over hill and dale.  But what do you do with it when you're on the move and need both hands.   Just thinkin' aloud here.     GR

well, i dunno about the taurus, but if your scoped pistol is a s&w 500, you'd sling it - the thing comes w/ swivels installed.
