Hmm, 9mm looks big enough from this angle...

| Not really pro any cartrige, i think it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I myself dont own a 9mm but i do have a 357, 40 and 45. I will cary the 40 or 45 depending on how i dress. If im on the street and have to use it i would prefer the 45 because i shoot best with that particular gun but in the home i would use my M4 because i have used one for so long in the ARMY that imediate action drills and mag changes now happen automaticly for me. Just my .02

This is fun. It seems to me (for what that's worth ), that untill the villains start following some kind of standardized code as to dress (nude would be good but not expected), posture (hands extended, hands to the side, facing the dispenser of justice or presenting side view, etc.), and weather or not they're allowed to hide behind cars, pickups, etc., I'm going for penetration. My present choice is a Bulldog, loaded with 250gr. Keiths on top of 7.5gr of Unique. Why? Because it's about all I can comfortably conceal and control. When I carry my 1911, it's stuffed full of hardball.

| I guess you could say I don't like the 9mm Para cartridge. I much prefer the .45ACP, or a .44 Special, .45 Colt, or even a .44 Magnum in a Mountain Gun. But the plain fact is that I carry what I am comfortable carrying all the time. Full size .45ACPs with humongoso magazines are not comfortable for me. So I carry either a S&W TiLight .38 Special in my pants pocket, or a Kahr CW9 in a lightweight belt holster. The Smith weighs 12 ounces, loaded. The Kahr goes 18 ounces. These guns may be "minimum spec" but they are always with me and they function flawlessly.

I have a .25 Auto in my pocket right now and every day. I can slow down an attacker until I get to something bigger.

Bill Jordan said years ago, "If your going to bet your life, bet it on a wheel gun".
Well, I guess times have changed since those days but before anyone makes any drastic decisions on what is and what is NOT, I would spend my time doing research on your very own and not take someone like myselfs word for this or that. It is your life that may be on the line.
I have fired and shot several pistol calibers and run my own tests on these various calibers and types of bullet (weight, jacketed & lead) there is a whole lot to consider in penetration tests that have been done. I can tell you up front, that lightweight bullets just don't get the job done in comparison.
One can get all the information they need and cut to the chase buy getting a copy of LAW ENFORCEMENT "GUN DIGEST" by Dean Grennell and Mason Williams. This book as the True Facts and pictures to back them up OK.
Now just breifly, the 45acp did not penetrate near as deep on test media as the .357 mag 158 grain (16 inches Super Vel ammo) bullet, nor the 9mm bullet (13 inches). The 230 grain hard ball came in 3rd at 11 inches! These tests were run in the early 1970's folks.
The other very important things to check out, are the FIT of the pistol in the shooters hand! Also weather or not, this person can handle the weight of that particular gun and model. If it doesn't fit like a fine leather glove, go to something that feels better. You may have to employ custom fit grips to make things just right for you.
I have never fired any groups at 20 yards in a combat position that were better than those I fired with my Colt Python years ago. Yes, the trigger was "tweak" just so but scores I have never beat with my Colt Gold Cup or custom worked model 70 series Colt 1911's. In all honesty, I don't or can't say weather my Kimbers in the vault would have been able to do the job back then and I am close to 40 years older now. Eyes are not as good nor the body in general! However, those Kimbers are one great pistol and so are the Springfields I might add. Just food for thought folks.

ive tried 9mm's before...ruger,smith& wesson and a convertible blackhawk,(even had a 40 one time)...i know a 9mm is what was used in the april 16th shooting at virginia tech(15 minutes from my house) but in my opinion their is better to be had! the old 45 acp demands respect from all corners of the world...its been in service for a long time, its proven its self more times than we all can mention.....its a classic!
a couple months ago i began researching a the 10mm auto, the daddy of the 40 s&w that every one is so crazzy for.(brief history...fbi adopted the 10mm,weinerfied field agents couldnt handle it...cried and smith jumped and cut the case down and now the 40 s&w is here ) anyhow after alot of studying,i started liking the 10mm so i bought my glock 20.
kinda like cars...theres no wrong choice....you got the classic 1969 z-28 camaro(my all time favorite) but you also have the new 500 plus hp. cobra mustangs.....new or old, get what you want while you still can and enjoy it!
in closing...no matter what you shoot...look at double tap ammo!....AWESOME STUFF!!!

BoonyRat, it is all about being able to handle the pistol & caliber, so that you are in FACT capable of defending yourself to the utmost in a confrontation no matter where or when.
Many men can NOT handle the recoil of the 10mm for starters but shoot very good scores with their 40 caliber, .357 caliber and the 45acp. It is far better to have a 9mm Beratta or a .308 caliber and be very very accurate with such a pistol & caliber than to have a so called "Hand-Cannon" that you are lucky to put 3 out of 7 rounds into the barn door size target at 12 yards.
I carry 2 pistols, one a .357 Smith & Wesson loaded with +P ammo and the other is a Kimber 45acp. I am proficient with both these weapons but the 10mm or 44 mag, I just can NOT handle to my satisfaction in a would be gunfight etc.

Well said, Hi Ball.
I used to shoot an out-of-the-box Series 80 Colt .45 in local IPSC tourneys many moons ago and I practiced with it a lot, using 230gr RNL bullets over 5.2gr of Red Dot - the same load I shot in competition. Some of those guys that I shot against had $2,000+ race guns that sounded like they were going full-auto. They usually shot the minimum load that made major power factor. I didn't stick with the tourneys long enough to take 1st place, but I did outscore some of those race gun shooters on a fairly regular basis. One day, after a match, I asked the range officer how it could be, that I, a relative novice with a stock Colt gub'ment model, could outshoot one of those quick-fingered race gun fellas. I'll never forget his simple answer: "You can't miss fast enough to win."
Wild Bill Hickock is said to have prevailed in a gunfight, essentially a Western-style showdown, at a measured 75 paces (might have been 80 - it's been a while since I read the accunt) by taking careful aim rather than going for speed. The loser in that contest apparently slung more lead in Hickock's general direction but none of his slugs connected. I don't recall whether Wild Bill got off the first shot, but he got off the one that mattered.
