You know..in the last year or so..I have asked myself a few times,"Why are you carrying this damned pistol?"..Hell you`re big enough to whip the shit out of anyone you need to...
Well..Then I said..I`ve used this Sig to put two deer and a hog out of their agony..
Hmm..not good enough ..
I swore when I came home in 91 that I would never pick another weapon up to harm another human being...
Shit..........That went out the door when I had a friend robbed and beaten half to death by a crackhead in South Florida.I have had three altercations that pushed the envelope of pulling iron since then,yet I didn`t because it wasn`t required to kill to settle it...
I think I carry these damned things for my kids and my wife...and my peace of mind.I know I have the ability to protect them and I will without thought if required and there is nothing else I can do but pull that trigger...
This is a hard question...but...Why do you carry??

well I put away over 1000 Bad Guys and I carry to protect myself and family .
if i was just a simple joe off the street the reason I would carry is to protect my self and family as calling the police for help is only going to get you so far .
the more people that get CHL the more the bad guys lose ,as they don't know if you are carrying or not.

The amount of home invasions, assaults, B&Es, drug crazed maniacs and random shootings in Atlanta is mind boggling. I don't carry all the time (can't take a weapon on the installation...) and don't always dress to enable carrying, but always think that I should be. Even around the house I should have it on me, though when I don't it is right beside my recliner.

I believe it is my responsibility to myself, my family, and my society to have the means to defend myself and any who are under my protection. The vast majority of human beings are herd animals, and are wired to believe there is safety in numbers. The individual matters little, as long as the herd (society) survives. I am not a herd animal. My individual survival matters to me, and my family. Conversly, my family's survival matters to me.
I am very happy to say Mrs. Charley believes strongly along the same lines.With few exceptions, we both carry whenever we leave the house, except when we go to work. I have a bit more freedom in that regard, she does not. When I pick her up, I had better have her carry gun with me!
Both of us know that neither of us will hesitate to use deadly force, if the situation warrants it. The mindset is there.

I hear ya fellas...I am asking because people carry for different reasons.Some have been a victim ,most haven`t..My wife doesn`t understand that I have been and seen the worst side of human nature and that a weapon and my ability to use it was my only grasp at life.I guess it is hard to ever get out of that mindset once you have lived it...The rifle never leaves the man after he gets out sort of thing.RatherB, you know what I`m saying..

I carry because i don't believe in being a victim or a statistic. I just feel comfortable being armed. I believe you owe it to your family to kept them safe. Some people only respect deadly force, you can reason with them and you can buy them, but they will give up the cause real quick if they think they are going to get hurt. You work to hard for what you have to just let some ass wipe just come in and hurt you are you family and take it.

I got my concealed carry permit just after 9/11 . I'd always wanted to do it before that but just never did. I guess being inundated with the images after the attacks and really "seeing" for the first time the hatred that there is out there towards us and how close to home it all hit, well, I suppose that's the final motivation I needed to get it done. I don't carry all the time. I don't even carry most of the time. Probably should, I guess. Up here in MT, ya still get the sense of being safe from any real danger other then local meatballs. Either way, I'm very glad I completed the steps to get my permit.
Another less romatic reason I wanted the permit was to simplify the process of firearm purchases. Nice to not have to go through the time with background checks. Just walk in, pick out the weapon, fill out the paperwork and show permit, pay and walk out.

First thing, I think we forget is really we aren't safe anywhere, every day you read in the paper or see on the news home invasions, people being shot cause some punk thought they were flashing gang signs, stabbings and shootings for a few dollars, unfortunately our "modern society" really ain't that civilized, I carry because of my duty to protect my family at all cost!, I owe it to society that should the need arise, to stop the criminal in his tracks, here and now!, last but not the least, it's a statement of a freeman to walk about armed.
Keep this in mind, the U.S. Supreme court has ruled that the police have no duty to protect you as an individual, Only society has a whole! basically your on your own!

I've allways felt that you don't carry a pistol because you expect trouble, if you do bring a rifle. It's for peace of mind in my opinion.

A little different take . . .
I All the reasons given are good reasons. "Family" is probably the best argument there is, God forbid there would ever be the necessity to be proven right.
Nevertheless, when considering whether to get my pistol permit (MN), politics also came into play. I went through the process not only to exercise my right to bear arms, but also to defend it. The more people sign on to carry--whether or not they actually do--the more political weight to the concept. Gun rights are less likely to get swept under the rug because they are only cared about by a few "fringe" kooks.
The same reason I finally joined the NRA and am applying for membership in a gun club to support the shooting sports. After years on the sidelines, it finally dawned on me that bad things happen when people who care don't get involved.

I carry to protect my life and that of all whom I love. True, there are various degrees of force that are justifiable depending on the situation, but I believe one should be prepared to meet any threat with equal or greater force. If a BG pulls a knife or a piece of his own, kung-fu just won't help.
Furthermore, I believe every responsible, law-abiding citizen of sound mind has a Holy, not to mention civic, duty to his fellow citizen to be armed and ready to defend: Especially in these times.
That's just my humble opinion.

I was the second class to go thru CCW "training" back in 94 or 95 when the law was passed here in Arizona. I have had a CCW ever since. They have just passed a law that does not require you to go thru a 3 hour renewal class when it expires. I carry because I believe society in general is becoming much more violent, and like Bea, I refuse to be a victim. When I was in school in the 60's no one would even entertain the thought of bringing a gun to school. Now it's common place. There were no school shootings. Few, if any gangs. No "lockdowns". Drug use was limited to the school administrator catching some "hippie" kid with a little grass now and then. Now there is more violence everywhere you go. Arguments that would start in a bar would escalate to a fight in the parking lot where somone would get a black eye and that was about it. Now, someone most always gets stabbed or shot. You see it on the news every day. This trend is bound to continue. There is a total lack of dicipline across the board in society today. From the parents to the teachers, to the workplace, on down the line. Carrying today gives you the safety you had back then without doing so. The sad thing is this will undoubtedly get far worse before it gets any better. Bill T.

I do not believe the US is getting more violent. Crime and violence have always been around, and will be around as long as a segmant of humanity believes it is easier to to steal what they need to survive, rather than work for it. Crime used to be strictly a local affair, newswise. Unless it was an event like the St. Valantine Day's massecre in Chicago, the newswires just didn'yt pick it up.
Today, you can search any crime database in seconds. A murder in California makes the news here in South Texas, for example. Why? It sells information.
Anybody ever read Laura Wilder's stories.? I don't mean the crap on TV, but words on a page? Read her daughter's account in the late1880/early1890s of moving by wagon to Missouri. A strange man walked up to their wagon just at dusk. The daughter, who was proably six or so at the time noted, "Quick as a snake, Mama reached into her apron pocket for her gun".
People who plan ahead have always carried weapons of some type. I don't want to shoot somebody, crackhead or otherwise. I want to be left in peace. If someone poses a serious enough threat to myself, or family, then I will shoot them to stop them from the threatening action. I won't loose sleep over it if they die, they are no different than the rats and other critters I kill regularly.
