I want to get my wife a concealable gun, but I don't really know what to get her. She's a good shot, well versed in handguns, and willing to carry. Unfortunatly, it's been a long time since she carried and, at 50+ she doesn't think she could handle a 45 any more. I know there's lots of opinions out there, guys and gals, so hit me with 'em...please!

Go to the range forthwith, and find out if she can handle the .45. Then you'll know. After you know that, you can ask the question again, if you need to.

I would say a 1911 platform is good I would think of a Pro Carry or a CDP from kimber or on of the Springfield compacts But a 45 ACP is the way to go .
My wife was carrying a Full sized 1911 and will be again soon.

Wife loves her .38 Tauras, it's just that she works at a bank and can't carry.

I would have to agree with Black6 and Hoa on this.A 38 snubby would be perfect for her..

To me, the answer is "whatever she is comfortable and confident with". Mrs. Charley uses a Makarov as a house gun, and sometimes carry gun. For everyday carry she uses a Kel-Tec P-32.
Granted, a 9x18, or .32 ACp is no powerhouse, but getting hit with one os no health potion, either. She can hit with either one pretty well, and the KT just disappears in her pocket.

I have to agree with Charley, it comes down to what she is comfortable with. Let her handle and if possible shoot the handguns that she is interested in. My wife found that she was most comfortable with a Taurus Titanium 38 Spl due to its weight and design. Good luck to you.

I agree that a 45 or a 38 is hard to beat. But, that being said if you don't like the weapon or are scared of it you aren't going to carry it. Worse yet is you carry it and can't hit a damn thing with it. Take the Mrs out to the range beg or borrow different guns and see what she likes caliber wise. Then work on the model. Don't rush this since she is the one thats going to be carrying the weapon she needs to be the one picking it out.
I'm not saying to completely walk away from this and given the fact that you asked for opinions shows you wouldn't, but, let her choose what she could end up using to save her life.
Hope this helps.
Take care Be safe Poacher.

I agree. A S&W model 340PD is an excellent gun for someone who may be carrying in a pocket or a purse. CT even makes a nice laser for it. I own 5 1911's and love the the design (and is my primary carry gun) but unless your wife is holstering the gun and carrying it on her body, they (1911's) don't like to get dirty and fire well, especially if you have a decent 1911 such as a Les Baer, Caspian, Wilson or Clark. You can get a revolver pretty darn dirty with dust bunny's and lint and it will still fire. I carry one as a backup and load it with factory 38 Special +P 125gr Speer GDHP and even my wife can rapid fire it and put all 5 bullets into a paper plate at 7 yards.
If you can't afford a S&W, Taurus is offering it's model 85 with CTLG's for right around $400.

Limiting her to snubs is like saying, "You can't handle a REAL gun anymore, honey." I had my wife go through 4 differant revolvers before she discovered she really dislikes wheelguns. She then had a full size 40 Witness, a Compact 40 Witness, finally located her favorite carry piece, a CZ2075 RAMI 9mm, and her second pistola, a CZ75 PCR 9mm.
The moral of the story is I spent a chunk of change on guns I ended up selling, because she didn't like them, wouldn't carry then, wouldn't shoot them. She loves her RAMI, loves her HBE Specialty Leatherworks COMIII IWB rig, and carries everywhere. She also is quite good with it!

So let her pick it out, and hopefully try it out. (When I worked a gunshop/range, if someone was looking at a USED gun we might let them have 6 rounds and a free target on the range.) Even if she decides a Berretta Tomcat is what she absolutely needs, go for it, it's better than harsh language. You can upgun later..
My $.02, usually worth a little less than you paid for it.

I think if a woman can handle a BFR 45/70 Revolver than she should be able to carry it if she wants. I'm not saying it (a 2" .38/357) is what a woman should carry. My wife loves to shoot my Custom Kimber 1911 45 ACP GVT but she can't pack a five inch comfortably. I was just saying a 2" snub is an excellent firearm to carry for a man or woman. 75% of peace officer's (that's department allow a second gun) wouldn't use them as a backup if they didn't work effectively. The great thing about them is, if stuffed in a purse or pocket and get gunked up they still fire. Bianchi Speed strips are also making it easier to carry more ammo too. A Glock 26 or any of the Sub frames are great choices too. I'm not trying to stereo any type of gun for woman. I believe they should carry anything they can shoot effectively and conceal comfortably. What even a woman ends up carrying, she need to be just like a man. She needs to be able to make a fast presentation, be able to put the lead where it counts and that takes: Practice Practice Practice.

Take her to an indoor range that rents guns on premises and just let her try any and all guns there until she finds one that she really likes. The gun will be her decision and not yours.

I'm with Charley. Get a Kel-Tec in 32 (maybe even 380). I personally prefer the 32 (I have both). With a belt clip or lanyard it can't be beat.
RULE ONE OF GUNFIGHTING: HAVE A GUN.
Start with a small, light easily concealed gun and add a larger one when you can. IE: Kel-Tec 32 ON HER PERSON AT ALL TIMES and a nice_________ (fill in the blank) in a purse, coat pocket or whateve the rest of the time.
Violence aginst women tends to be up close and personal. A 32 to the head ALWAYS wins, and a few to the guts ain't too shabby, either.
