I've been told that some 1911 style handguns can shoot more than one caliber simply by fitting a new top end and barrel onto the frame?
Is it really that simple? I mean...will the new caliber mags fit? Would there have to be other mods?
If it's true I might be interested in having a 40S&W top end for my Para 14-45LTD... but I just can't seem to get my head around this idea so I thought I'd ask!

Yes it is that simple. I have Kimber Team Match II in 45ACP with a 22lr conversion. Simply swap the tops and mag and you're good to go. My Sig 229 in 40S&W can also be swapped with a 357Sig barrel, they use the same mags. I can also drop in a 9mm barrel from Barsto and swap the mags. There are many different variations out there. My Desert Eagle really isn't a 1911 variation but with some swapping I can convert it to 357mag, 41mag, 440Corbon, 44mag or 50AE. The frames are all the same.

You can change your 45 to 40 Corbon and all you need is a new barrel. They are advertised in several magazines I have seen. The 40 Corbon is the 45 ACP necked down to 40.

The answer is a good, solid, "it depends". Easier to stick with families of the same case head size, like .400 Corbon, .45 ACP and .45 Super, and the 9x19/.38 Super family. I find it kind of a PITA to change ejectors. Rather have (and do) different frames.

same here.i did change my 1911 from 45 to 400.you dont want to buy that ammo, and they are a challenge to load.the seating die needs to fit the bullet perfectly.
