Is it me or should there be a hunting season in most states for whitetails with a handgun.  In Pa. there are all types of methods to harvest whitetails but a handgun season is left out.  With the limited range  (less than that of a modern black powder) of handguns it would stand to reason that it would offer another opportunity and maybe, just maybe, get additional people interested in the hunting sports.  Just my .02  Your thoughts..........

We got ours back in 86' and it was a blessing. The only thing I've used since then, besides a handgun, was a muzzle loader or bow. We still can't use rifles though and for good reason. What they have done is raised the quota to 6, with the right permits, but only one can be antlered.

I don't  agree with any specail season. Muzzle loader, archery  etc.., should run concurent with any other rifle season. If  a person wished to use alternate means , they are legal in a regualr season.

For instance handguns. Why should you be given a special opportunity  to hunt withoot al the crowds over some one who choses to hunt witha rifle? If you want more challenge, then hunt with the handgun in regular season.

I agree with SADDLESORE.  I've never been a fan of the bow'n arrow crowd being able to start hunting many weeks earlier then the rest just cause they're throwing sticks.  Maybe there's reasons the various state game mangement folks have for doing this, but it's never been explained clearly to me.

That said, since Montana "does" have it set up that the bow boys get to start early, I very much am in favor of establishing a dedicated handgun season, running right along with the archery season.  Or maybe even running after general season closes.  Make it specific as to the style of firearm used, of course.  Revolver and semi-auto; straight walled cartridges, only.  Eliminate these guys that chamber up rifle rounds in their handcannons, which I'm not against in the least.  They'd just have to start and be used along with the rest of the rifle hunters during general season.

Handgun seasons have been talked about for a long time.  Nothing ever happens.

Here in Ohio handguns are included in the general gun season. You can hunt with a shotgun, muzzleloader OR bow too if you wish.

Handguns must be a min. of 38cal, a straight-walled case, and the gun must have a min. barrel length of 5". Bow hunters would never stand a chance in the woods  here if they had to hunt along side gun hunters. The woods are literally filled every year.

I like the fact that bow hunters have a season to themselves. It allows us to get away from the crowds, and we have big ones. In 2006 there were 67,912 deer killed by bow hunters and 169,404 taken with firearms. In Colorado bow hunters took 11,835 deer and there are no figures for gun hunters. For Montana it was 5,660 for bows and 62,968 for guns. Considering the topography here I think the state is justified in having seperate seasons. There are just too many deer with the population estimated at 675,000.

This is the very reasonn I dislike them. Why should any one group be given better consideration than another. If there are too many deer , issue more doe licenses. At least the special season should be after all the rifle seasons.

Here in CO the Archery season runs 6 weeks and the muzzle loader sesaon runs in there at the same time for 10 days. All before rifle season. By the time rifle season rolls around the elk are pushed back into the thick nasty stuff or private land and the kill ratiio is lessoned

Don't see a need for a handgun season in Texas. Except for a few counties, even muzzleloaders have no special season.  Any centerfire cartridge is legal in Texas, I suppose you could hunt with a .25 ACP if you were so inclined.

In Minnesota the deer opener is like 100 rats fighting in a small cage for 10 pieces of cheese.

It can get ugly up here during the regular season. I've seen chainsaws taken out to cut down other guys tree stands and trails spiked with nails to ward off ATV's. And that was on property the State owned, not private property.

I currently do pay the State extra money to hunt in the special seasons but it's to hunt after the bulk of the rats are done fighting over the cheese. The rats make sure any special season is hamstrung with restrictions. Whatever...as long as I don't have bump into them every 20 mins crashing through the woods with whiskey on their breath yelling at me, "See anything?"

All of them rats I say...rats with guns.

What MInnesota needs to do then is to divide up the allocated hunting time into 3-4 season and make the hunters choose what one they want to hunt in. This spreads the pressure out and every one has the same opportunity.

Co has 4 separate rifle elk seaosn and it works.

No special season for handguns here, either (haven't read the regs yet for the Fall '08 seasons, though). You can take big game with any centerfire rifle during regular season. There are some muzzleloader/shotgun only sections along the rivers that run through populated areas (mostly on the Boise River and islands on the Snake). We have archery and primitive weapons-only hunts both early and late in the year, but as far as I know, no handgun-only units, hunts or seasons.

The one thing that Ohiococnut left out is that Ohio does not have modern rifle hunting.

If I want to use my 30-30 I have to go to West Virginia. Ohiococnut is right about the deer population, if I want to use bow, shotgun, pistol or primitive weapons, I can harvest up to 7 deer in my county during all seasons. That is a lot of meat.

My area is so economically depressed that many families depend on deer hunting to put meat on their table, generally year round from what they have stashed in the freezers. Grandma gets her license every year as well as the 16 year olds, hunting is a family event and the first day of season is a school holiday.
