My Ruger Security Six has a problem, when i draw the hammer back and fire it will only shoot 2 rounds before it drops to half cock then i draw hammwer back and it goes to half cock again then draw back again and it fires the next two rounds. If i dont draw the hammer back and just squeeze away it shoots all six. I really like the gun, its an old LEO service revolver. Anyone have any knowlage of this pistol? I`m wondering if it is operator head space and timeing or a part failure.

Very high probability that you have a worn out part.  In the old days, there was a "hand" that prevented the half cock notch from engaging when the trigger is pulled.  Dunno what the modern name for the part is, but I'd take a small bet yours is shot.  Easy smithing to fix if that's what it is, but there could be other problems.  Call Ruger or take it to a good smith.

They have a lifetime warranty? This gun has to be at least 20 years old.

While you're figgerin out how to fix your Ruger, consider this. I almost never shoot a DA sixgun SA, and I'm far from alone. I have found that I can shoot much more accurately DA. Of course, all my revolvers have had action jobs and are smooth as silk. The Ruger DAs are not really hard to work on. Suggestion? Get a DA-only bobbed hammer; strip the gun down; change out springs with Wolffs; smooth and polish action parts (remove NO metal). You might be amazed at what you can come up with. You might also be amazed at how well you can shoot that super-smooth DA wheelgun!

Good luck!

Thanks Dirtkicker, i have noticed that the trigger weight is very heavy in DA mode. I have done some trigger work on some of my other guns and they came out fine. My grandfather was a smith and he did teach me a few things. The reason i posted this is because i have no experience with this type of firearm.  I will look into the hammer and polishing the trigger pieces and getting some new springs. Thanks again.

I've seen several Security Sixes that developed timing issues. The one I have now was bought cheaply because it wouldn't quite index on one chamber!

From our description, it does sound like a hammer/scear problem. You do want to replace those prings. The early series were almost imposible to shoot DA because of the gorilla weight springs.

Some of them were bears, for sure. But don't despair, RF! I have an early stainless 2-3/4" Speed Six in .357 that I stripped, installed a DAO hammer, smoothed and stoned internals, and changed out springs on. It is the smoothest DA I own and I have a slew of action-jobbed S&Ws to compare it with.

I have all ruger revolvers since '76 thats my oldest security six in 357mag.  I took them apart and lubed them with moly on all the moving parts since they were new.  You can take apart your security six really easy.  There's a pin thats there when you remove the grips. it locks the firing spring back when its cocked so you can take it out and then push out the hammer pin.   I use the spring guide to push out the trigger assembly with the button thats in the slot were the hammer goes.  You push that button in and the trigger assembly falls out.  Its not hard to do...
