Anyone got any experience, feedback, or thoughts in general on the .40 S&W as a personal protection gun of ladies?  I have never shot one.  Any comparisons of recoil with 9mm or 45 ACP?

The gun it's fired from makes more of a difference than the cartridge.  A .45 ACP out of a standard 1911 is a pussycat.  Fired from one of the super lightweight polymer guns, it can be a real handfull.  The same is true of the .40.  The only .40's I've shot have been fullsize service type pistols and the recoil was not harsh at all.  I would expect the 9MM to have the least recoil of the three but, again, out of some of the tiny, super light, pistols the 9mm can have a pretty sharp recoil.

More than any of that, it depends on the lady.  If you are able to find a .40 that fits your handsize well, I doubt the recoil will be a problem.  My daughter-in-law has a little Charter Arms Undercover .38 special that hurts my hand when I shoot it.  Doesn't bother her a bit.  The grips fit her tiny (ladies extra small glove size) hand, and they are way too small for me.  I took the Pachmayr grips off from my Bulldog and put them on her Undercover and it was like shooting a cap pistol.

Comparing them in semi's it's more than the 9mm but not as rough as the 45acp. I've got a Sig 226 in 40S&W and it's really not that bad even with factory grips. My youngest daughter, who's 21yrs old had no problem shooting it at the range. In fact she literally shot the pants off of her fiancĂ©. For some reason he just couldn't hit the black and peppered my target stand while she was keeping them in the 8x-10x.
