| My mistake it's a different powder than reloaders have access to.The Laws of each state are different but I'm familiar with California Laws where I was employed as a peace officer until retirement so in this sue happy state I always carry factory ammo in my CCW weapons none of my handloaded pocket rockets. | factory ammo quite often uses non canister powder. as far a liability,i am glad that i live in a state that has a law that if i have to shoot someone in self defense and the law does not press charges,a civil suit cannot be filed.

That was our policy too, Timbo, last place I worked. We qualified twice a year, so we got new ammo on those occasions and shot up our old carry ammo.
I generally carry factory ammo and I practice with both the factory stuff and home-rolled ammo that is as close to the published specs for the factory ammo as I can make it, including type and weight of bullet and published velocity.
That being said, I have experienced squib loads, failures to feed and failures to extract with factory "defense" ammo, as well as FMJs. In my experience, factory ammo is not 100% reliable - close, but not 100%.
For my 3 cents worth:
1) If one is going to carry factory ammo, practice with it often enough to be competent and safe, and be able to explain why that ammunition was chosen over every other kind on the market. That question may or may not be asked after a shooting, but it's a good question to mull over before buying defense ammo.
2) If home-rolled ammo is what will be carried for defensive use, keep meticulous loading records and be able to explain not only why factory ammo was rejected for use, but why the particular handload was assembled. If you have a chronograph, that will help with load development.
3) Shoot to stop, not to wound and not to kill. If it takes 2 rounds to neutralize (i.e., stop) a lethal threat, then that's what it takes. If it takes 10 rounds, it takes 10 rounds. If the threat continues to advance, despite having been hit, keep shooting (and keep moving, if possible, away from the threat). Carry extra ammunition. If there's a break in the action, reload while keeping your eyes on the threat. When the threat ceases to be a threat, stop shooting.
Note that I said "threat" and not man/person. It might be a pitbull, bear, cougar, rabid raccoon, or just about any animal - including man - that can hurt you, or even something mechanical.

| It's a different powder than we get to reload with. You all do what you want re your carry ammo, me, I'll do what I learned in law enforcement liability classes to cover my butt.If you're a LE officer & you substitute your own pocket rockets for the dept factory issue ammo and use it in a fire fight your butt is grass & the judge & jury is the lawnmower plus you'll be on your own in any lawsuit & probably get fired. Kind of late but I'll put my 2 cents in. As a federal officer, 30 years ago and a shooter most of my life, I have heard basically the same reasoning for using factory loads for defense. Normally if a person uses non-factory ammo, the oppositon lawyers will attempt to portray the shooter as a gun crazy person who loads for maximum loads so he can do as much damage as possible and is looking for someone to try his loads on. Lawyers will also use handloads to take attention away from the bad guy and focus on the actions of the victim. In some cases, the person defending himself with reloads will have to pay thru the nose, irregardless of why he defending himself.
Like most comments I read, I prefer my loads to factory loads but I carry factory loads in my defense guns. A 357 S&W and Colt 1911.
