The .40 was not on the market when I got my 9mm. You guys think it's better?

the 40 is really a good one and started making a name for itself when the awb limited mag cap to 10 rounds. the 9 didn't make as much sense as the 40 during that period because the 40 was almost maxed out at 10 rounds. in the 9, you ended up w/ a full size gun that didn't have as much power, and the same number of mag cap. recoil difference between the 2 was minimal. thus, the 40 made a lot more sense.

enter ipsc/idpa competitions, and the 9 is a minor power factor cartridge, while the 40 cruises at major power factor.

the awb is lifted and the 9 gets a breath of fresh air because its prime usefuleness in the form of mag cap is available again, but then you have companies like smith and glock that produce 40's w/ mag caps that nearly rival the 9 and the guns are just as concealable and just as shootable but are more powerful...

all that said... nope, the 9 is neither dead nor dying. i don't like the 9 a whole lot but for practical purposes i don't feel there is a lot of difference between the 2 cartridges.

years ago i had a ruger p-89 in 9mm. i absolutely hated the thing. recoil was this distinct, funky 2-step process, and accuracy was poor at best. at the same time a friend picked up a glock 22. it was slightly smaller, lighter, much more accurate, recoil was easier to recover from, and it ran smoothly. i blamed all the ruger's shortcomings on the cartridge when it should've been blamed on the gun.

so, last week i finally re-entered the 9mm world in the form of a 2-tone beretta 92 after all these years of 40's. sure, ancient technology, and doesn't really do anything that my 40's can't do better, and mag cap is actually the same as my lighter, smaller 40's - but it was the weapon i learned on in the military, so i bought it for nostalgic purposes. anyway, after spending some time at the range w/ it i found it to be well-behaved and accurate and fun to shoot.

in sum, nothing wrong w/ a 9mm, and it really does well in small guns like the sig 239 and smaller. don't feel like you need to replace your taurus just because it is not a 40. if you want to replace it because you want to, then sure, consider what's available in the 40 market, but there's nothing wrong w/ the 9 or your gun.

9mm dead???  Not on your life!!!! In my not-so-humble opinion, the .40 S&W is just a bastard step-child of the 10mm. If you have a .45ACP and a 9x19mm I believe you have things covered. The .40 is nice if you are FBI, who can't handle the 10mm or the .45ACP. Can someone fill me in on where the .40 stands in popularity for handgun cartridges?? With the choice in bullets for the 9x19mm these days, there's not much use for the .40 S&W.... However, I will say--to each his own. The thing that keeps this sport going is diversity.. If someone responds with a more-than-favorable popularity for the .40, I promise that I'll say nothing further about that cartridge.

At the store I work in, 40S&W sales out-number all others by 3 to 1(not just 9mm....everything).  And the women seem to be buying most of them for Concealed Carry(class given every 3 weeks), which seemed to puzzle me.

IPSC/USPSA/IDPA are all the rage for the last few years.  Most people actually will spend some serious money building customized guns for just these games.  I did!  STI frame, Caspian slide, hybrid 12 port comp, etc, etc, etc.......7 27-round/5 22-round clips.......$3,850.00(plus a whole lot more).  Caliber I chose was the 9x23mm(based on the 9mm Largo), but these were a tad bit warmer.  Typical load was 124gr FMJ at 1625fps!!

I have a 9mm, but it performs.....it's a 12" TC barrel for my Contender.  Also have the 12" TC barrel for 40S&W, and the cartridge will surprise you from a 12"!!

Scott (every thing's better coming out a TC) B

I have the Glock 23 in 40 and i like the cal but prefer the 9mm for my carry gun but more for the light weight pistol i have in 9mm. I believe the 45 ACP is superior to both. The 9mm will be around when the 40 is gone.

I don't have a single .40 S&W handgun. and don't load for it, either. Nothing against it, just hasn't happened. SAPD has carried .40s for some years, and has an excellent track record with it. No handgun cartridge is Thor's Hammer, no matter what some folks say. I carry both a .45 ACP and a 9x19 depending on the situation, and I'm confident with both.

thats the exact gun i just traded for! ive got a glock g20 10mm with a lone wolf 40 s&w acc. barrel but i just had to have the taurus! sure the 40 has more bite but you can find 9mm ammo anywhere in the world and besides that, everyone knows that "its not what you hit them with, its where you hit them"!

if you want a 40,i say go for it but i wouldnt sacrafice the 9mm to do it:thumbs:...boonyrat

In my neck of the woods the 9mm and .45acp are the two front runners for CCW calibers with the .40 bringing up third place.  In LEO circles the .40 is their primary sidearm caliber and this alone keeps it in the top three for most popular gun and ammo sales.

I prefer the 9mm for my CCW and home defense needs because it works and I can afford to get lots of practice in with it.

9mm on the endangered  species list? I dont think so. Not even close. Is the .40 a better round ?, probably.
When you see the major manufactures  such as Glock , Springfield, S&W drop the cartridge from their line then it's time to get worried. But I certainly dont see this happening any time soon.

Just think of all the current manufacturers of the .38 special. A round that just wont die. Held in some reverence by most of us as a Grand Old Cartridge, will be here for many more years. Probably forever.

My 9's and 40's peacefully co-exist and each offers a wide range of loads and applications, plus fun! I'm not ashamed to be seen on the range with either of them, and I feel adequately armed no matter which I carry. Both carry the freight down range with the appropriate load. You can drive a nail with a claw hammer or a 6-lb sledge, but at the end of the day the nail's still driven and one of 'em is easier to swing than the other.

That Taurus in the photo is a pretty handsome shooter.

I feel the 9mm is going to be around for a long time.  The 40 has a lot of catching up to do. The 40 is bigger and maybe more potent but not much more.  For conceiled carry a hollow point 9mm in anything from 115 to 147 grain is lethal with all the fire power these little autos have.  If you shoot very much, 40 prices on ammo will eat you up.  The military just bought a new order of pistols chambered for 9mm.  As long as they stick with it, it means more ammo is produced in this caliber helping to somewhat keep the price down.  I've got 3 autos all chambered for 9mm.

I have 9's for everyday carry and the house guns for uninvited guests. I sold all my 40's years ago when several of my close friends have been directly involed with police action shootings and I personally observed poor performance with the 40. I will agree placement is everything but I have seen personally seen 3 people and multiple dogs hit with different rounds of the 40 and with very poor results. The Border Patrol and ICE agents that carry 40 will agree that there rounds are loaded so hot that many of the smaller guys and most females cannot handle them well at all, let along getting off several accurate shots if needed right away. Today's ammo and choices have given the 9mm a whole new outlook. I feel I could accurately average 10 shots with my 9's in the same time I might get 5 or 6 shots accurately with a 40.

What  load was used? SAPD has been using light and fast since they adopted the .40, and have had quite good results. Female officers seem to do ok with it, too. Many PDs and Agencys went with the heavier bullet, lower velocity loads, and some of those don't seem to have a great track record.

As for the miliitary, the 9mm will stay forever as long as we are in NATO. Certain special force and CIA affiliated groups will use 40 and 45 cals and any furture unknown cartrige as they arn't bogged down with the red tape and burocracy.

Buy one of each and enjoy!!!

there shouldn't be a concern of your 9 going the way of the dinosaurs.  it'll be here till the end.

for me personally, .40's, 10's and 45's are what I prefer, though.  just to satisfy an itch, i did get myself into a 9 a couple years back but just couldn't bring myself to get the standard vanilla flavor.  i went with the winmag in an iai automag III.  fun one to play with that ya don't see around the range every day.

good luck with you 9.  klallen

Hardly......9mm has been around for 100 years give or take and is the most popular handgun caliber for military use in the world. Not saying the .40 is bad.....(I like the 10mm better)....but the 9mm is here to stay for quite awhile.

Seems that this one comes up quite often, I personally think that the 9mm certainly fills the niche of the small concealed pistol well. Better to have a mouse gun, than no gun right?
Some times the weather and appropriate apparel for that day makes my carry decision  for me. A hot day with a thin shirt or tank top rules out carry a full framed pistol, so I usually pick up the J-frame.
Thank goodness Falls here so I can carry the 45.
