Any body have a source for 45 ACP shot shells. I may need for because of some snakes on some of my land.

Been loading my own for a couple of years, found an RCBS die set at a friend's shop, that he had purchased from a commercial reloader who retired. I'd always wanted a set, but was too cheap to pay the $100 plus retail...mine were $20, alomg with 100 formed cases.
Use cut down .308 brass, W231, and a .410 wad. #9 shot to fill the cae, and a .357 gas check to seal the mouth. Fairly dense patterns out to 30 feet or so, and enough energy to kill small game. Cycles fine in my .45s.
With storebought shotshells, I think CCI is the only game in town. Remington loaded them a few years back, but seem to have dropped them.
Fun stuff to play with, try breaking hand thrown clay pigeons!

Charley,
I would not bring my Kimber to sporting clays, I am afraid I would show them all up (NOT).
At the moment, I think $14 a box of ten is a little too much. I ran out the WW II surplus ones back in 99, now I need some.
I wish I had a set of the dies at $20. I have a lot of 308 brass on hand as well as everything except the lead shot.
Thanks,
Jerry

Kicker,
Have you loaded 45 ACP with these? If I want to try this shape out, I may invert a 220 LRN or a SWC and see if this shape will work in my Raptor or my Match II pistols, as well as my P220
Thanks,
Jerry

Haven't loaded them myself except for .45 Colt. A friend did however and said he had to fiddle with seating depth to get them to work and then wasn't impressed with feeding. I can't remember exactly but I think he said he used B'eye instead of the recommended Unique due to the small powder space left.
I never tried them cuz I don't see the need for them, what with .38/.357, .45C, .44 Special and Mag, and good shovels handy.
You pays your nickel and you takes your chances!
Let us know how you make out.

Jerry while surfing the net several years ago I found a site with information about some special ops 45acp antipersonnel shot shells used in vietnam which were capable of killing large mammals also and were used for survival game hunting, they were packed in plain brown paper boxes w/o any identifying information. The April 1976 American Rifleman p20 article explains how to make 45acp shotshells using brass made from 7.62 NATO or 308 brass. If you go to Beartooth Bullets Shooters Forum and look up 45 ACP Shotshell Loads then look for 4/17/2003 ED HARRIS there is an explanation I copied the article from the site if you can't locate it send me your home address and I'll send it to you.Bill from S.Calif Last edited on Thu Jul 17th, 2008 03:33 PM by sako06

that die set sounds fun to play with.bet them .410 wads are a bear to cram in them 357 size holes.i have sized down rifle cases with my .400 corbon dies.the neck area goes to .400 dia and the inside to .350. i should be able to expand with a 35 cal neck expander and use 357 gc,s.much like your setup.do you crimp the thick case mouth over the GC? i have thought of reaming the case mouth out with a .375 dia reamer, leaving about .012 wall thickness in the neck area and then expanding with a .410 expander to use a 41 cal GC.the outside dia will go to about .435 which is .005 to .007 less than the factory shot shells.maybe then i can then run them thru a 45 seat die with a rn seat punch and sorta crimp the GC,s in place. but then if a fella had some 45 win mag cases.....

The article I read was interesting reading sounds like they were used in close encounters with lots of different quadraped and biped critters.Speer has shot capsules for 45lc & 357.I loaded some 357 brass with the capsules using #9 shot, fired it in my SW Mod 19 6" worked ok. Sako,
I can't find the article by Ed Harris on that forum. I am thinking of carrying my 586 and use 357 Mag in 158 LSWC in the other five chambers. Now I need to make a holster for that pistol.

UPDATE ON SPEER SHOT CAPSULES FOR .45...
These capsules are 1.10" long. To get a .45ACP COAL of 1.24" you would have to seat these to BELOW the web, which in addition to being impossible would obviously leave no room for powder. They will NOT work for .45ACP. My friend who said he had used them must have had some earlier capsules designed for the ACP, because these ain't it!
Sorry if anyone was mislead by my earlier post.

Midway has the RCBS forming dies in stock and they are a discontinued item from RCBS.
So ordered a set.

Heres a couple of steps in the process...LR .308 case, cut and run thru form die, loaded cartridge. JHP for comparison. I think the RCBS trim die uses an extended shellholder. Somehow, the trim die disappeared before the set ended up at the shop I bought it from. I first cut down a Lee seater to the proper length and hardened it with Case en it. Made my own trim die. Now I cut the cases on my Unimat and finish them on a Lyman trimmer.
Harris' article was in Handloading Digest # 14, 1995 (Jeez, didn't realize it was so long ago!). PM me if you want, and I'll scan it and send it to you.
