i agree with 777.  neither of these will have trouble with deer, or much else, when loaded correctly.  they are big cartridges.  if you're gonna be reaching out a ways, the .460 would probably be your better choice, as it can be loaded to extend the playing field a bit.  if your preference is simply to shoot a larger diameter bullet, the .475 would be your choice.

magnum research makes a solid single action platform for either of these rounds that's quite affordable, in contrast to s&w revolvers in their offerings.

if close range deer is the largest thing hunted and you don't want to subject yourself to the rigors of either of the above rounds, smaller rounds could also be considered that'd have no problem with the task at hand.  .44 , .45, .454 (although it's close to the .475 in performance), .480 .  lots of nice stuff out there in revolvers.

good luck with the choice.  klallen

So I can take any North American game animal with either round? It's just that the .460 has a bit more range.

truth be told, either round's probably taken every animal on the african continent, at one time or another.  stuff found here would be no problem if the shooter did his job and the round was loaded correctly.  for me, that would be quality cast bullets for the larger animals.

regarding range, for same weight bullets, the .460 will add around 300 fps.  it's bullet will have a better bc so add that to the faster speed, it'll reach better.  it's simply got more case capacity.  for the linebaugh, you'll be working with mid 20 to lower 30 gr. powder charges, depending on bullet weight and powder selected.  the 460 uses upper 30 to mid 40 gr. charges, depending on the same factors.  as mentioned, save for the caliber class, it's just a bigger creature all around.  later.

if big's to your liking, you could always step up to the .460's bigger brother .  that's a fun one to play with, too.  talk to ya later.  klallen

Klallen I thought once upon a time that I really needed a 460 to round out my pistol collection but I soon found out, it was like owning a "pit-bull" to go bird hunting with in the fields.

I mean that pistol bit my hand hard to the point of pain and it really brought on more pain later that night. I then took the doctor's advice and didn't shoot that pistol anymore. My hand was able to be of some use then. Finally, I figured out that my model 29 S&W in 44 mag would be all I needed around the place. I traded off that .460 and never regretted one iota.

PS, the shooting of big bore pistols will without a doubt bring about a condition in your hands and elbows that will make you wish you never saw that gun. I learned my lesson the hard way.

evening tonk  >>  i do suppose shooting some of the large revolver cartridges now on the market could at some point cause damage to the hand and/or elbow.  don't know if i've ever seen documented proof of this but do imagine there's a point where to much shooting is simply to much on the extremities.  for me, keeping shooting sessions relatively short while making the most of each has lead to no ill effects.  i mean, i've had the occasional tender palm, but certainly no more then the bruises i've developed on the shoulder after some rifle sessions.  there's certainly a technique to managing the larger stuff, as well.  funny thing is it's probably different for everyone.  and if ya never adaquately find it, well, more then likely, you sell the handgun.  i know that's what i'd do if all a gun did was hurt me when i shot it.  no shame in getting rid of a gun that hurts, that's for sure.

right now my .500s&wmag is as big as i've got in a revolver.  the original corbon factory load with a 440 gr. lbt solid from cp was very snappy.  while fun shooting, at an average of darn hear 1700 fps, it was a handful.  i wouldn't doubt that one load singlehandedly turned many off of their .500's real quick.  as i started reloading for the round, i went a different route     ...     heavier bullet and drop the velocity while still maintaining the thump of the round.  this in and of itself would make the round more comfortable but along with that, i also settled on reloading for comfort rather then top end performance.  by this i mean if a 500 gr. cast at 1400 fps was comfortable and i could shoot it well, i'd not reach for anything more, even thought the gun and cartridge could safely and easily achieve 1500fps.  even with the reduced load, there isn't a revolver round out there that'll run with the power.  i like that.  take care.  >>  klallen

Klallen both the .460 and 500 Smith & Wesson are beautiful pistols to behold! I am not going to sell mine but will indeed shoot it at a lower velocity than factory loads.

Years ago I shot a lot of handguns, to the tune of over 14,000 a year give or take 500 or so perhaps. Sounds like a lot but the fellow from Texas that took all the marbles that year, totaled some 22,000 rounds according to him. Those were .45acp's. I also was shooting a Colt  Python .357 mag as well. Not to mention the .41 caliber and 44 magnum. It was an accumulation of all that shooting that help cause my hand condition today I figure.

i'll never put that many rounds through any one of my handguns in my lifetime, let alone, a year.  i'm assuming competition of some sort?

i tend to go through cycles with my handgun shooting.  for a while it'll be the larger revolvers (.454 and .500).  i'll tinker with loads or just practice.  then i'll move to the small semi-auto's (tok, mak, .357sig, 9mmwinmag).  then the smaller revolvers (.375 & .44).  then get the bug for the larger semi-auto's (.45winmag, .50ae).  lately, it's been load development for the cc semi's (.40s&w, 10mm, .400corbon, .41ae, .45gap, .45acp, .50gi).  seems like the reloading aspect is a cycle unto itself that'll never get completely finished.  i add another handguns far faster then i finish reloading projects.  not good.

then working the rifles in amongst all that.  good lord.  because of this,   no one firearm i have will ever get the amount of shooting yours did.  later.  klallen

Klallen, yes I was in competitive shooting for awhile way back when but your correct, I too don't seem to get the reloading projects finished like I should for spending time with another new rifle or pistol purchase etc. It is a never ending cycle. It has only taken me some 40 plus years to figure that out my wife says.LOL:lol:

I love shooting the 460S&W and S&W 500 and probably shoot them more than any other handguns I own. I've got a 10 1/2" PC 460S&W and the 2 3/4", 6", 7 1/2", 8 3/8" and 10 1/2" S&W 500. I've been shooting big bores a little over 30yrs and thankfully I haven't felt the need to back off yet. I think I've posted a picture of them here before

Here they are.

My little ES snubby is a handful!

Here's some of what I've loaded for them over the years.

good lord.  that's a nice chunk of change you have wrapped up in 6 revolvers.  you find something you like, you go after it, don't ya?  lol.  one .500's plenty for me.  i got a Taurus 10" barrel to play with.

those big bullets for the .500 the 700 gr. flat noses from that fella in alaska?  looks just like his bullet.  been thinking about toying with them but haven't yet.

Well, I was married for almost 25yrs and raised 3 girls. My ex and I parted ways and I was single for 6yrs and had some change, for once. I'd explain in more detail but it makes me pissy. If you know what I mean  Recently got re-married, thank God my new wife likes my hobbies and encourages it

Yep, those are Ranger Ricks "Tyrannosaurus Thumpers". They really aren't that bad to shoot, honestly.

neah, you don't have to explain nothing.  i know a feller that has 12 .308's and adding more thenever one strikes him.  no idea what's up with that.

what's your load and velocity for them 700's.  when i talked with ranger rick, he wasn't 100% certain they would chamber in my taurus when seated to his crimping groove.  that's partially why i never got them.  suppose i should have him send me a small batch of them just to seat a couple and see if it's even possible.

Klallen,

I loaded them with Star *R* brass using 29.2gr of IMR 4198 with CCI250 primers. The OAL is 2.340, MV 1035fps.

I do know Taurus first made their revolvers with a shorter cylinder but later changed to the longer one. When measuring either allow for the rim or measure from the back thrust plate to the end of the cylinder. In my guns I still have about 1/6" left of cylinder. If they'll work let me know, I'm sure I've got 10 I can send you to play with  I need to order more too!

Unlike most pistol cartridges there's something to keep in mind. When you're sighted in @25yds if you decide to shoot @50yds you must aim lower, much lower. This big slug stays in the bore longer and because of the recoil the gun is much higher when it leaves the bore. Yes, it does recoil that much, but you probably already know that. It didn't take me long to figure this out my first time out with them. If I'm sighted in @50yds I have to aim 3' lower @100yds using standard 350gr slugs.

My favorite is the 7 1/2" Hunter model
