I'm all loaded up for my .500 S&W Magnum Research BFR, but the temp. is just too high to shoot. (113 + degrees all week). I cooked up a bunch of different loads for it from 325 grains, up to 400 grains. Powder of choice was H-110. It takes a lot to fill that case! The cartridge handloads like a dream. A lot like the .44 Mag., or the .45 Colt. I just wish Lee would make one of their excellent Factory Crimp Dies in that caliber. If they don't soon, I'll just buy another one in .45-70 and take it to work and modify it. While I'm waiting for it to cool down I'll catch up on some handloading. I just got a smoking deal from a shooter friend of mine at work. He sold me over 1,000 rounds of FACTORY .357 Mag. ammo. (Various manufacturers), some of it Cor-Bon and Speer Gold Dot, all of it jacketed, along with 1,000 once fired brass cases, some Nickel, some Brass, for only $150.00! I couldn't get my money out fast enough! So I've got my work cut out for me either way.   billt.

Back in May of 04 I have the chance to shoot a Smith 500 and it was to say interesting . I believe its more gun then you will ever need.

a good friend has taken hogs and a deer or two with it and it does a great job on them.

I haven't shot one yet, and haven't even seen one at my range.  I did see one of the short barrel S&W's in a store and it looks like one I'll be avoiding.   That gun looks like it would tear my hands up.   I think the longer barrel revolvers, like yours, would be much better to shoot, and give better ballistics.

Heck of a good deal on all that ammo and brass.  Gotta love a friend like that.

On the LEE dies I found that the seater die if you lower it, it crimps the same as the RCBS Dies do and i purchased one Lee Crimp Die for my 308win and by lowering the seater die I get a better roll on the crimp just like the RCBS dies do.  After using the seater die to crimp my 308win I tried the factory crimp die and it did nothing.  I believe the factory crimp die is if you want those 4 quarter positioned marks on the crimp like the factory does it if looks are important.  I much prefer the solid 360 degree crimp that the seater dies give us.                            BigBill

I want a 500 S&W but i'm waiting for Ruger to make it in a Super Sized Super Redhawk  I really don't like the looks of the S&W handgun with the tapered barrel and muzzle brake.  I think a twin barrel in an over under position like the colt python is needed to tame this big caliber down so a revolver can handle it with a shorter barrel.  The over slung weight is the key to taming the recoil. If Ruger doesn't make one soon I may get a 454 casull.  Hows the recoil on the BFR???  That looks neat too.

Big Bill,

Recoil on the .500 S&W BFR isn't too bad. The gun is well balanced for having a 10" tube, and muzzle rise isn't as bad as my Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. As soon as the heat breaks here I intend to get out and do some more shooting. Next I'm going to work up some heavy cast Gas Check loads.   billt
