I've never fired a gun in S&W 500. But I can honestly say I don't care for the looks of the new performance center guns. That barrel just doesn't look right to me. If anything, I prefer the full underlug to the tapered lug.
Now I'm from the old school where a S&W M29 or M57 or M27 was the cat's meow. I think these new guns look like they were made in outer-space.
If I were to shoot one of them I might change my point of view. And if it's a gun you like I would by all means get one.
I suppose being a traditionalist has it's downfalls, but give me the older guns anyday. Just my 2 cents.

I personally would rather have the old style barrel and don't really like the full lug barrel. I wish Smith would go back to putting regular barrels back on the 629 and make them 6.5 inch like the first Model 29's and do away with the transfer bar and go back to the firing pin on the hammer and do away with the stupid key lock.

That key lock is my biggest gripe with the newer Smiths. Can't stand it. I also wish they'd make the recessed cylinders of old. Much nicer in my opinion.
Bea, if you do get that gun I bet you'll love it. But like you, I wish S&W would make their guns the old fashioned way. Like this.

I wish that Ruger would super size the super redhawk and put another solid weight under the barrel like the python for controlling the mass recoil and produce in the 500 S&W round. Until then I'll pass on whats out there i don't like the way the new look of handguns is going either it sure makes sense in getting some more 45's and playing with them. I'm old school too in the looks department and i hope the sales being off sends a message so they can correct and redesign the look of the 500 S&W mag. I want a wheel gun not something out of star wars. Until it changes my $$ stays in my wallet. BigBill

This is my Magnum Research BFR Single Action in .500 S&W Magnum. It's turned out to be a good performer overall. Recoil with 400 Gr. bullets is a little on the stout side, but not as bad as my Ruger Super Redhawk with hot Cor-Bon loads. I like the long cylinder of the BFR. It will accommodate any size or length bullet. I've heard of guys loading up to and over 700 GRAIN BULLETS in this thing! I haven't got as much shooting in with it as I would like. The heat here this time of year (116 the other day), is too much to shoot in. In a couple of months I'll be back at it. I purchased 500 Hornady cases from Midway, and bullets from my local Sportsmans Warehouse. Primers were Federal Magnum Rifle Primers. Some of the first Starline brass produced in this caliber had primer pockets to accept large PISTOL primers. They have since switched to large RIFLE primer pockets. The newer brass has a "R" on the headstamp. Another nice thing about the long cylinder in the BFR is if a bullet pulls out from recoil, (not uncommon in this caliber), it won't tie up the gun. billt.

This is my other one in .45-70. It's a good shooter as well. Both have 10" barrels. billt.

Billt your starting to get me with these BFR's I always wanted another super blackhawk with a 10" barrel but maybe its really the BFR i want and don't know it? just kidding but true i'm thinking about it now. I want a big bore handgun with a long barrel something accurate and has the power so i can go out bear hunting with. The BFR sure maybe the way to go too. They make one in 444? I have a 444 marlin but i want a 45/70 any way too. I was thinking of a Ruger Super Red Hawk in 454casull with a 9 1/2" barrel for now but i don't see too many used ones. You got my wish list getting longer again just when it was getting shorter. Hmm 500S&W BFR?

The BFR is made in .444 Marlin, .450 Marlin, .30-30 Winchester, as well as several other calibers. If you have one in .45-70 they can fit an extra cylinder in .450 Marlin if you wish. Also, my .500 S&W BFR came with the frame drilled and tapped for a Weaver Style scope base which they provide with the gun. Here is a video of a couple of gals fireing it in 4 different calibers. It may take some time to download depending on your internet connection speed. billt.

I'm going to keep an eye on it for when he has a mark down sale and then i'll grab it. Its kind of funny this guy when he isn't hungry for cash the used stuff goes up in prices then he gets antsy and just all of a sudden drops the prices so things will move. I would rather see a more constant / average pricing all the time rather than ups and downs. On the other hand i get better prices if i time it right but i can miss stuff too. You also might want to take a look at Gun List magazine. There are several listed new at some really good prices. You can easily find a dealer that will handle the transaction for a flat fee, or at the max. 10%. You might even be able to find a new one that way for about the same price as used. I would shy away from any internet sales however. There are simply too many unscrupulous people involved in these type of sales. Unless of course it's someone you know. billt.

I made a few internet deals in the past few years and have done great but lately there are scams out there now looking for an easy buck but i was real lucky in the past. Now i'm very careful who i buy from. Last edited on Wed Aug 3rd, 2005 08:29 PM by BigBill

I went yesterday and checked out the S&W Performance Center pistol and will have to say it feel about as good as any Smith i have handled. The pistol is smooth as glass and the trigger pull is match grade. Smith didn't cut any corners making this handgun, but the price reflex this. I may purchase one, but will have to give it some more thought before laying out that much cash for a pistol, that i won't use except for hunting. Will post a photo if i decide to purchases.

Bea175,
If you buy one, check out the new Midway flyer for this month. Hornady is now making a 500 Gr. Jacketed Soft Point XTP Bullet in .500 Dia. This gun is designed to toss a lot of lead, and I can't wait to get my paws on a couple of boxes of these and seat them under a nice healthy charge of H-110 in my BFR! This gun is more fun than a date with Morgan Fairchild! I just wish the price of components, (brass and bullets), would come down a little. Whatever the market will bear I guess. billt.
