A co worker asked me to take a look at his blued .357 Blackhawk that he has just aquired and touch up the bluing and basically a good cleaning. The frame/trigger guard which are aluminum have scratches and chips down to bare metal and I'm wanting to strip it and refinish. Anyone ever refinished aluminum, and if so what did you use?

There are many ways to finish aluminum, I prefer anodizing it, but I sent that kind of work out to a place that does quality anodizing.

Before snding the metal out, I grit blast the piece to get all of the old finish off, some times after grit blasting, I bead blast the metal to give it mottle finish, so it won't be so shiney bright after it gets anodized.

If he doesn't want to go to all that work, you could try Aluma Hyde from Brownells:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1117/Product/ALUMA_HYDE_reg__II

With use Aluma Hyde, it is still best to grit blast or bead blast the metal to clean it up.

Hope this helps,

Jerry

On my old model Ruger Blackhawk .45 the ejector rod and grip frame got to looking pretty ratty. I just polished them out to shiny metal and the end result looked pretty doggone cool. I could just send it in to Ruger to be refinished but then they'd converted to the new model system which I do not much care for. I grew up with Colt single actions and I know the meaning of "Five beans in the wheel." In fact, that's one of the things I teach in my Hunter Ed clases is  how to properly load an old style single action revolver.

I took the frame down to bare aluminum, I then applied 3 light coats of Wheeler's Cerama-Coat (purchased from the fine folks at Midway USA) and tomorrow I'll bake the frame to cure it. So far it looks incredible and I'm very pleased with the results....so far, I'll let you know the post bake results and hopefully follow up with some photos.

Sorry no pics, but I was impressed with the finish of the Cerama-Coat. Follow instructions to the letter for best results. The owner of the Blackhawk thought I was tricking him another gun, he didn't think it was his.
