There's a few ways to get a 1911 and one is to build your own there some affordable kits right now too.  Has anyone ever done this?

i haven't, but the thought has crossed my mind a couple times. i think the only way to make it work out well is if you can get all the 'hi-speed low-drag' parts in the kit. this has got to be a more effective way than doing what i did/am doing: start w/ a plain colt, then put in all sorts of parts and yank the factory parts... wind up w/ things on the bench you are sure you'll never use again (grip safety, spur hammer, plastic trigger, etc).

Sarco is offering a kit(slide kit, frame parts) minus the frame.  The frame is seperate and you have to go thru an FFL to get it.  The whole thing is around $300 w/frame this makes the 1911 build very attractive.  The slide has to be fitted to the frame plus the inners inside the frame has to be all fitted too.  It doesn't look to be hard to do.            BigBill

If I were looking for an affordable alternative I'd go with a Springfield.  For under $450 in some areas I'd just rather have a pistol ready to go.  If there's a problem send it back to the manufacturer.  With a 'build it yourself' there's no one to turn to but yourself.  That's just my thoughts on this.

Obviously I don't like building things by myself.

Well I have built a lot of stuff on this planet from 200k lb's of cnc machines, to chuckers, to building 155mm howitzers for the US Army, I have worked in one of the most modern failure analysis / engineering research labs in the country for 18 years it was copied from the one in Japan, besides starting out as a car/jeep mechanic.  I'm sure I can do it and it sounds like I would end up with a more accurate 1911 because I'm fitting the slide to the frame so it won't be so loose.  It sounds like a fun winter project. I have a brand new SA 1911a1  since the 80's still in the box already.  I was just thinking of getting some hands on knowledge in building 1911's.  These 1911 build Kits seem to be the latest craze. Plus i want a custom built one. I really don't think its too hard to do.

I went to my local dealer to order a frame for my build and he had a Auto Ordnance "Army" 1911a1 45acp for $384 that was too hard to resist I couldn't help myself and i purchased it.  He had a Springfield Armory "Goverment" model 1911a1 too for $414.  They are making some affordable collectables and shooters now.  Now there are the S.A.M. ,  Charles daly and the Rock Iland armory 1911's 45's too selling for around $300+ but i never see any locally yet.  The frames are all made by the same company but the finish is different with the different gun manufacturers. With the high priced Colts($800 to$1,000) and the higher priced used stuff($450 to $650) the lower priced new stuff sure looks to be the best buy right now wether you collect or just want a shooter.  Springfield Armory just came out with a double stack mag in their 1911a1 goverment model.  Its so new its not on their website yet and i seen it but i'm not sure of the price yet.  I'm not sure how the hand grip feels too with the wider mag/body of the frame.  But there seems to be a 1911 for all budgets now.  I never did order my frame Hmmm......

I still think the 1911 45acp build(kit gun) will be a more accurate gun if its fitted correctly, you have to fit the slide to the frame so the tighter for better for accuracy. Then by fitting the barrel and bushing and a full length guide rod for the recoil spring it should be ok.  With everything tightened up just add some adjustable sights and wrap around pachmayr grips and it sounds like we have a winner.  Thats my winter project for this year to build the ultimate 45acp. Its going to be a slow project while the snow is falling.

BigBill,  since you've got the background and inclination to build a 45 yourself I'd say quit buying those pre-made guns and order that frame!!   If I had snow during the winter maybe I'd get a project like that too.  We do get a lot of rain, but I always find myself catching up on reloading projects then.

I'm working on a slide right now.  I purchased a slide kit to play with.  I just fitted a new barrel and a national match barrel bushing to my norinco too.  The barrel is just right.  I noticed the orginal barrel bushings are loose in the slides for some reason on most of my 45acp's.  The national match bushing solves that problem.  It needs to be fitted to the slide and the barrel this tightens everything up to improve the 1911 accuracy.
