This is what I practice at least twice a month:

While at the range try shooting at 5, 10, 15, 20 feet at a target that the bullseye or center of your perp is 6" in diameter. Mix the distance up, then shoot 2 shot rounds and 3 shot rounds volleys. Fire with an extended arm stance, from the hip and then parallel with chest.  Mix up combinations of distance, stance and number of rounds.

Once you confident you can do this, then try this at dusk. Complete that volley of shooting, then wait until it is dark out and then do this exercise. After you have done this in the dark, then do this with your flash light of choice. Figure out which stance with the flash light you prefer, but try most of the flash light shooting stances.

When you think your getting proficient in this type of shooting,  then look at how your home is laid out. See what the likely distances are and where you can be protected by the structure of your home. Plus have a phone handy to call 911, so they can cart the bodies off.  If you act like this perp is a real pro, you won't have much in the way of hiding places or protective spaces. Most break ins are done by people who don't want to get shot, so they don't carry a weapon, but there are a few who carry a firearm and really don't know how to use them crop up now and then.

Now lay out your attack plan for your home. Think about from where you sleep, where you eat and your entertainment areas. With you pistol or other weapons UNLOADED, do a walk thru ti all of these places you think you have an advantage in. Revise as needed. Walk thru this plan several times. Now turn the lights out and do your attack stance with and with out a flash light.

There are some thing you may need to do, like tell the home invader to get out, or that you have placed a call to 911 and the police are on the way. You should check locally on those things. The best thing I have found is to dial 911 and drop the phone. So they will send every body, yelling "don't kill me (with a scream)" may get them to show up sooner than later. Do all of these things while you are doing a dry fire run thru of your tactical plan.

Please remember that you are basically in a plaster board and wood structure, bullets can go thru these things, use that to your advantage. If the perp is leaving, don't shoot them in the back. But you could yell you forgot some thing and when they turn around, you will probably get a legal shot at the perp. If you can make up a wall that you use at the range, something like 3 to 5 feet of wall with a corner. Just like in your homes, then shoot at it to see how your bullets penetrate this mock up of your walls in your home.

Stray bullets may be a problem, such as the bullet going thru a couple of walls and taking out your frig or putting a hole in your roof.

In my house from the bedrooms out to the living room only a sawed off shoot gun will work, all long guns and shutguns are too long for the space. In many cases to use these weapons effectively may put you in harms way.

These are things that I have learned over the years and people keep giving me new ideas to add to this routine, but the key here is to practice a lot, if you think you have practiced too much, then practice again.

Hope this helps,

Jerry

Our tactical plan is go to the bedroom and get behind the bed after locking the door.

A call to 911 while yelling loudly that I have 911 on the phone and the cops are coming, that I am armed and if you break into the room we're in (Just the wife and I as the kids are all grown and gone.) I will shoot you. I live in the county and there is a Circle K store just six-tenths of mile from my home. All the sheriff's deputies seem to hang out there so getting law enforcement to my house would most likely have a rapid response.

They'll arrest the bad guy(s) and probably beat hell out of them for having to leave their donut break. (Just kidding guys.:hilarious:

When calling 911 with the family have the wife call them, then she should scream into the phone and drop the phone. They come faster.

In my case, we have almost no law enforcement at this time, budget problems. The nearest law enforcement to me even in bad times will not show up in under 45 minutes. We have no local donut shops, so there are no officers hanging out there, but I don't subscribe to the urban legend of Cops and donut shops, it could be true in some cities, but I live in the land of God and Guns.
