Do any of you fellas carry a 44 Magnum as a conceal carry weapon? What are your thoughts on it in this role? Most of the 44 Mags I have ever fired have been loud heavy recoiling pistols.I just wondered if anybody really carries that much gun daily..

It's better than taking a knife to a gun fight that's for sure. My personal opinion is that it  is a little too much as snd + follow up shots are harder to get back on target. I prefer something more than a .38 special or 9 mm, so I load my .357 to 38 Special +P specs. I  carry a Smith 2" snubby. However, everyone has thier own personal preference.

In addition, most 44 mags are a lot heavier and you need to chose something that is comfortable to carry or you will be leaving it home, when you need to be carrying it.

In CA we're allowed 3 guns on a permit.  I have my 1911, Beretta 92F and S&W M29 with 6" barrel.   The 44 gets carried the least.  Hardly ever.  It's kinda big to stuff inside my waistband and walk around comfortably.  Makes for a nice car gun though.   I've never had to use it, or even say "Go ahead, make my day".   (Ok, I've used it on a few rattlers but not on two legged snakes.)

I've usually had it loaded with 200gr XTPs and Unique as a defensive round.   Easy to shoot and accurate.    I wouldn't carry it with full power 240gr loads.  Too much recoil and muzzle blast.   Probably too much bullet penetration as well.   If I run out of ammo I can use the gun as a club.

If you're a reloader it's easy to make any 44 Mag revolver shoot like a big 38 Spl.  Most guys I see shooting 44s at my range want to get all the "magnum performance" they can out of their loads.   For hunting I can see the need for speed, but not in a defensive role.   I tend to go more on the slow side with my loads.  Makes it easier on me and the gun.   Using 44 Spl brass can make the loads even easier to shoot.

Timber, I see a 44 Magnum in your future.

I have carried Ruger Redhawks in 44mag for many years since they came out both shoulder holstered with 7 1/2" barrel and 5 1/2" barrel.  I still do ocasionally still take them out for a breath of fresh air. But it depends on where i'm going too if i take out the 44mag.  I carry two speed loaders too. Say hello to my big buddy and his 18 little friends!!!!

My CCW carry loads are 200 JHP speer loaded to near max load.  At the range I shoot the 44 spec cases with SWC Leadcast for target practice then when i'm done practicing i run some of my carry loads thru it just to keep the edge on how they handle.

The bottomline is I hope the day never comes to when I have to use it but I know its there if i need it to defend me or my family.

Appreciate the thoughts fellas.

And yup GR,There may be one in my future.I now have a set of dies for a 44Magnum and two sets of dies for a 10mm Auto.I never fooled much with reloading for a pistol.I know how its done and what to watch for etc.but actually doing it or having as much interest in it as I do with rifle cartridges didn`t happen.I guess its time to get my hands dirty with some pistol loading though...:thumbs:I`ll probably be aggravating you fellas for tips and loads with certain things as soon as this starts...:sofa:

timber: i carried my smith in a sholder holster during deer season 1 year. everyday i came back to camp my back would be a hurting. then i started useing the belt holster it wasnt so bad.

and as far as loads i keep them light now cause the kids are shooting it more than i do now days.. BUT when i was a younger boy i would hop it up as much as i could.we are talking flames that would set the grass on fire. winchester 296 and lg. mag primers were used.

when loading for the .44 the 1 thing you want to watch mostly is the crimp. dont want the bullet comming out and jamming the cyl.:homer:

Hey AL.Thanks for the tip on that.I`m starting to get a little older and pushing it to the max doesn`t mean as much to me anymore too.Just accurate is about it.I will probably never carry a 44 as a CCW but in the pickup I have nice console. With a concealed permit I wouldn`t mind one with a light load just in case.

You all about ready to start deer hunting? When does your archery season open?

I have eaten crow fairly often. Sort of look forward to the next opportunity now.

Carping about the weather, corn prices, and fat women, eating crow, and spreading bull,,,,,,my life is all about animals.
