Has anyone ever blown thru the HBWC bullet by using too much of a charge?

I just don't want to be in the situation where I pull the trigger, the bullet cores out and the perp has a chance, or worse I get sued for emotional distress.

In 1991, downtown Columbus, Ohio, a guy cane up and pulled a gun on me. We did not have CCW licenses then. He wanted my wallet and my keys.

I walked away with his gun and his wallet. I dropped the wallet and pistol off at the police HQ and said I found them on the street.

A Colt Series 70 trumps a H&R 22 pistol.

Cool story. I bet he felt about 2' tall with that 22 when you drew down on him with yours.

These Hornady wadcutters I have are cheap and accurate, but messy. Forget the leading in the barrel, I'm having to clean the leading out of the seater die. The lube is powdery and comes off on your hands and the lead is quite soft. I'll probably keep ordering as they work so well for the price but....hmm...

My oldest son, the police officer wanted to know why I didn't plug him and walk away.

Those HBWC are accurate and messy as mentioned, but for self protection I have been told to get Winchester Rangers.

almost sounds like old lube...u mite try warming them up a bit ,stand a few up on a pan and if nothing else run a hair dryer over them ,get them good and warm and see if some of the powdery-ness goes away ,but of course they could be mica'd, they use to use a wax type lube similar to lee's liquid alox but i havent checked them in a few years , they were always kind of soft for me ,if they stay the way they are after tryin to warm them up a lil but just try to remember to clean the seater die after every box or three, i check my pre-boughts everytime i add primers( 100 rounds)ditto on my home cast just to keep things clean, some boolit styles are worse than others tho

The HBWCs are knurled, which according to Hornady, "retains lubricant over the entire bearing surface". They work well but yeah, a little messy. I cleaned the die tonight after seating only 50 of these and a ring of lead had formed right around the crimping shoulder and there was some leading on the seating plug.

Jerry I have four 50 rd boxes of Win Rangers in 45 Auto +P, have them saved for WWIII or zombie attack or some such. It's a nasty little bullet from what I've read. Bought them for $25 a box over a year ago, oh how prices have changed...

I'm on TDY to Fort Campbell right now and Midsouth Shooting Supply is right down the road from here. They don't have a storefront, but I did take the opportunity to place an order for pickup and avoid shipping and hazmat. Got a 4lbs jug of Bullseye, just seeing it puts a smile on my face thinking of all the 38/357 loads I'll enjoy firing from it. But I also got a 500 pack of 148gr hard cast DEWCs. These should be much cleaner to load, and the mention of blowing out a HBWC in a barrel sounds real nasty. Think I'll use these for the 357 loads.

Finally I got a pound of W296 and a box of 125gr XTPs. Bet you can guess what those are for... :roflmao:

They have plenty of primers in stock........as long as you need 50 BMG or Federal 209, haha. Everything else is out. Powders were hard to come by as well, got lucky with the Bullseye. A Jug of IMR 4895 is kind of my holy grail right now, no luck, maybe next time.

4895 and varget lolz ..i think every cci primer known to man is available on gun brokers..and no where else ( not counting personal stashes)i wonder when those guys will figure out why their primers get zero bids ?lolz,i've actually seen places where 209's are becoming endagered as well ( tho i have to admit i like the federal 209a's the best) i think ( if i recall correctly) powder valley had a few wolfs left ( but no imr 4895 and other assorted desirable ones )g'luck next time amigo !

Are the DEWCs just as accurate as the HBWCs? Seat flush or 1/10th out and crimp on the groove?

From "The Patriot" -- aim small, hit small. Practice different positions, different hands, and in motion. That way you "get off the X ring" but can still hit the target. wc
ETA: next spring at the Ap. gathering we will again practice "snap shooting".

i set mine to seat level with the top of the crimping groove then roll crimp , it ends up @ 1.236 in the 38 cases and 1.369 for me in the mag cases( or about 3/4 of the crimping groove covered - some of that depends on the mold the precast i buy are by mid-states,used to buy e&e)the casual shooter wont be able to tell the difference between the hollow bases or the solids, they are decently accurate unless loaded hot ,the hollow based seem more accurate with lighter loads anyways ,and while this is one of a very few i do roll crimp i dont crimp real hard a lil more than removing the bell, btw ? these same loads mushroom a bit when fired from the 10" tc barrel lolz (.415-.418 at least when hitting damp sand )but not so much from the wheel gun

Sounds good. Think I'll shoot a bunch of these over 3gr of Bullseye in 357 cases and just get used to my new GP100 before I go experimenting too much. I've only run a box of factory through it so far and accuracy was, uh... remarkable...

I really need to bring part of my bench with me next time I travel, at least some hand tools and a big bag of brass to process. I'm going stir-crazy in this hotel room with a whole box of components and no loading equipment.
