Lets have an argument over the best state to live in based on this.  I want to fish , I want to hunt , I want to own any gun I see fit to own and can afford, I want to be left alone, I don't want to have to put my car through inspection every year, I don't want to be taxed every year on what I own,  I want to have as many girlfriends as I see fit and can afford.  I don't want somebody telling me how to live, I want my son to say the pledge and pray in school or not,  I want to walk out onto my front portch or back deck and not see anyone, I don't want to hear any cars when I go to bed... I thik thats it.

In 1979, I took my calculator to the library and tabulated the square mile area and population of each state. Simple division yielded "people per square mile" for each state. Of course, Alaska, No 1, was least dense, and Connecticut had the greatest density. Montana was No 4. It fit and even today, depending on location, meets most of your requirements which were similar to mine.

Oh one last thing.  I don't want to have to draw a tag for a deer, turkey, bear, beer or wiskey in my home state.

If you are resident of either Texas or Alaska, both states I am very familiar with and have lived/live in, you will be happy.

Of course in Texas, that is until the mexicans completely over-run us while Bush smiles and shakes hands with the next tinhat reconquistadora dipshit to come along.

Not sure I want to buy land and have to worry about someone showing up 40 years later saying they've come for the oil /mineral rights /  and need to take down my house.  Is it true that someone can sell the land but not what's under the surface?

I was thinking more along Kentuckey or Tenn.  Somewhere in the mountians. Maybe even southern West Virgina.  I like Montana , North Dakota Maybe South Dakota but I don't want to have to draw.

I should have called this post free living may have had more ppl look and respond I really Need to get out of here and want to know if the grass is greener where you are.

I like Texas. The closest I have been to Maryland is fishing in the Chesapeak Bay. All I caught was a big ole toothy eel. In Texas you can hunt hogs day or night 24/7/365.  I know a guy that has a BAR from the Bonny & Clyde days another owns a MAC 10. Most of my other friends own lots of less exotic gun most have a carry permit.

Texas just passed the CASTLE LAW with help from my state Senator & state Rep.

I live just outside the city limits, if I want to test I just walk out in the back yard and test.

The tax part is a little tough. No state income tax, but modest property taxes. You will have to have an inspection sticker.

Well..... Tis Hard To Be Humble IF Ya Be An Okie...

And ya better be tough to live in these parts.  Texas and Oklahoma have things that if they don't sting, stick, bite or fang ya, they'll stink ya.  Then ya have the wild critters to contend with.

As far as Mineral rights, certainly the old timers that were smart enuff kept them in the family and just sold the top soil.  BUT..... that does not give an oil company nor the owner of the mineral rights to roll in on top of you.  Casue being the land owner, you now have control of the Access Rights.  Ergo, you may not get a penny from any oil pumped, but they still have to pay you to come in and get it.  Pay for the maintenance and up keep of the access route.  Pay for any and all damages done while the process is in production.

SO...............Don't sweat the small stuff.

In Oklahoma never, in Texas once each year. If you live outside one of the big cities you don't even have to pass an emissions test.

Camo, Wisconsin isn't bad. Fishing for Salmon on the Great Lakes, Muskies up Nort', Smallies and Walleyes all over the state, Big Catfish on the Mississippi, Trout streams across southern half of the state. Tons of Big Deer. 3 month archery, 9 day gun, BP seasons. Spring and fall turkey. September Bear by draw. Even a smattering of hogs in the SW part of the state. Mississippi flyway for Ducks and Geese. Small game everywhere. Rumored to have more trap and shooting ranges per capita than any other state. Some big woods up north, some secluded valleys in the hillbilly country of SW driftless area (rough ground, deep valleys from lack of Glaciation). Hell you can even have an outhouse in most townships. Fairly gun friendly but no ccw. No MV inspections, no smog insp. Great schools. Tons of establishments serving adult beverages that attract hungry women. Most people mind their own business.

Downside: High Property taxes, Republik of Madison BS, Boone and Crockett Mosquitos

I've lived in the SW, NW, SE and Central portions for 53 years except for a 9 year stint 40 miles into Iowa. I was back across the mighty Miss as often as possible then. Haven't missed a deer opener in 40 years.  RD

Couldn't log in last night, couldn't answer.

If I have to go to TX or OK I will.

If I HAVE TO? Jeez, I wouldn't move anywhere I HAVE TO. I'd move where I want to.

Texas has its drawbacks, but on the whole it's a prettty decent place to live. Lots of fishing and hunting opportunities, stay out of Harris, Travis, and Dallas counties and you will find it a very gun freindly place.

No income tax, but we do have once a year vehicle inspections. Make friends with a state inspection station, and it's just a formality. No personal proprty tax, like some states, just real estate. Still lots of places where you won't hear traffic, too. No drawing for tags, either.

Mountains?  Western and Northern AR.  While we do have modest personal property taxes and income tax, there's no vehicle inspection and car/truck tags are $30 or less a year.  CCW is not a problem to obtain, as long as you fit within the law.

Hunting and fishing?  We've got hogs, deer, elk, black bear, turkey, ducks (flyway thru eastern AR) and lots of other critters like coyotes, raccoon, squirrel, armadillos, etc.  Trout, walleye, black bass, striped bass, and other various, assorted and sundry fishes.  The only tags needed are for black bear and elk, and trout and duck stamps.  We've got a lot of small lakes (15,000 acres or less), and probably 10-15 that are all over over that.  300 lb deer are not unusual, nor are 40lb plus stripers.

There are a few that know I fish like some of you guys hunt, as a matter of fact, I've slacked off on fishing this last week.  I only went Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thurs.  I decided not to go this morning for two reasons, got company coming and the freezer's full of fish.  LOL, and the company is coming to fish tomorrow and Sunday.

Rural?  You got it here.  I shoot in the yard.  When it snows, it's usually melted by the next day.

I'll be the first to admit that Texas and OK, along with TN can be good places to live.  I've spent a lot of time in those states - but, I've fished lakes all over the the lower tier of states - from FL across to AZ, and from NV across to the Carolinas and WVA, and never found a lake I liked better than the one I'm fishing now.  (I used to fish the Striper Circuit).

If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer 'em.

Camo, I'd say Wyoming. A hunter's paradise. Elk,deer, antelope, bighorn, moose, lot's of grizzlies and stinkin wolves in the west part of state, coyotes, badger, turkey, sage and blue grouse, squirrels, quail, etc. No state taxes. sales tax around 4%. Depends on county.Only about 450,000 people in the whole state. Have more antelope than that. I don't know what their vehicle reg. are but I'll bet low. I can call my freind and ask him. Property taxes are very low. I paid $60.00 for my 40 acres there ! Compare that to mine in Caif. that was $3200.00 for a lot that is about 1/8 acre ! Vehicle reg. here are b.s. too ! 4 more years and I'm moving back. In Wy. the people are very freindly. Gas is allot cheaper than Ca. . about 40 cents a gallon cheaper. Just like the difference between Az. and Ca. Makes me sick because the refineries are here. Wy., NO traffic anywhere what so ever. No stress. Property is very low $. The trick there is to find a decent job before you move there. You can also keep loaded weapons in your car like in Ariz. . I'm pretty sure you can wear them too as long as they aren't conceled. Nevada is a good choice too as far as no state taxes and property. Northern Nv. is nice. Problem there is residents have to draw tags too, just like in Ariz.. But that's why they have such good herds and heads. One of my best friends is from Arkansas and what DirtyDingus says is very true. Same thing though, line up a job first. housing is very cheap there. Dirty, my friend is from Yellvile. I think that's how you spell it.

I disagree...Texas sucks!!

Anywhere but Texas unless you plan to move back to Maryland soon and take some illegal mexicans with you!!

HeeHeeHee.

Texas is ok but hunting is expensive as there is very limited public land and leases are getting expensive.

Maine has some good hunting and fishing.

JMO,

Coz
